Does narrowing of lanes actually reduce speeds? Maybe for some. With the amount of commercial traffic that uses west St. George, narrowing of lanes might seem a little crazy but hey, engineers know what they are doing....

Well there ya go then. I learn something new everyday. Thankfully, I don't have to drive straight trucks or cube vans for a living. I did find this part of the Forbes article rather perplexing.

The Johns Hopkins review of a major repurposing project in Florida found that reducing lane width “reduced the number of crashes and increased roadway safety,” and “…had minimal effect on the overall travel speed in the corridor.”

It's well documented all over the place, people get more tentative the narrower the lane is, hence they slow down.

They have repaved the eastern portion of St. George Blvd (to Centennial Park). The travel lanes are noticeably narrower, and, the bike lanes are notably more capacious.

Yes, and they took away my turning lane onto Arlington! But as a regular cyclist, I applaud the rest.

I imagine with the deaths of high profile NHLer Johnny Gaudreau and his brother while out cycling yesterday in New Jersey, that we’ll see an increased emphasis on cycling safety in general. I realize they were hit by a impaired driver, but the fact that he didn’t know they were there and hit them from behind, really showcases how far we still have to go in making streets safe for cyclists.

I wonder where the alignment of this proposed trail is? Ryan Street is a long street........

That's an excellent thought. You are probably correct. A trail here could be connected to the city's existing trail system both to the north and the south.

They do a lot of unnecessary circling around in Bore Park first, but, after that, you get a really good idea of how pleasant the Riverfront Trail is.

This is actually a very appealing feature about Moncton. Our integrated trail system is extensive, and is improving every year.

From Mayor Dawn Arnold's summary of today's city council meeting:

From last week’s Private Session we agreed to accept the gift of the old Sunnybrae Rink on Donald Avenue. The plan will be to secure the site, protect a portion of the structure, and incorporate interpretive panels as part of the Panacadie trail/boardwalk construction.

So, the city has assumed ownership of the old Sunny Brae Arena off of Donald Avenue (the vaguely Roman Coliseumesque ruin not far from the railway overpass over Wheeler Blvd), and will turn it into an attraction of sorts. The Panacadie Trail (slowly being extended) will run right by the ruin. A portion of the wall will be stabilized, and interpretive plaques mounted so that it will become a bit of a rest area along the trail. Not a bad idea actually. Unfortunately, it sounds like the majority of the structure will be demolished. This is sad. I have always been fascinated by this ruin. It's just so unexpected to see this structure quietly decaying out there on the marsh.

I presume this decision has been made because the ruin is structurally unstable.

^ Fascinating. I had never heard of this structure. It's pretty amazing that the site has sat derelict and abandoned for nearly 100 years.

Still, the site of the old Forum in SJ has been a large vacant lot on Main St since it burned down 58 years ago in 1967 so..........

It's well known in the city, but, you kinda have to know where it is. I remember it from long ago because it is adjacent to the CNR mainline, and is easily visible from passing passenger trains. My eldest son live in the Sunny Brae neighbourhood, and I drive by regularly when I go to see him.
