So according to my buddy, someone took a sh*t on a Line 1 train today. It was on one of the seats in the “quad” areas (two sets of two seats facing each other). Instead of taking the train out of service they simply blocked off those seats with caution tape and kept moving along

This can’t be real life. I feel a lot better about my decision to stand on trains and buses even when there are seats available… just move to plastic seats FFS!

Personally I don't understand the facination in Ottawa with the cloth seats.

Sure they can be more comfortable than hard plastic but they always look dirty or have whatever crawling on them.

Even vinyl seats like they have on the more recent STO buses, would be cleaner visually and easier to maintain.

But I don't get why they have stuck with the blue cloth seats since they were introduced in 1999.

Comfort
Cloth >>> Hard Plastic

Cleanliness and Appearance
Hard Plastic >>>>>>>> Cloth

I'd prefer vinyl for sure.

In humid weather, you can stick to plastic or vinyl.

Trains have A/C, so it shouldn't be an issue nowadays.

1990s-era non-air-conditioned high-floor vinyl-seat 40-foot bus flashback PTSD triggered.

Trains have A/C and it's frequently even in use when necessary!

If anything, they overheat and cool. I'm in a t-shirt in summer, I don't need the A/C to be at 18, and I have a coat on in winter, so I don't need the cabin to be heated up to 25. Maybe that's where they can find some savings; keep the trains at 24 in summer and 15 in winter.

They definitely overheat on the buses.

City officials raised alarm over ceiling stability before St-Laurent station shutdown
'Corroded' ceiling structure wasn't inspected after February 2023 until problems began, emails show

Priscilla Ki Sun Hwang · CBC News
Posted: Aug 23, 2024 4:00 AM EDT | Last Updated: 5 hours ago

Internal emails reveal several City of Ottawa officials were concerned about the stability of the ceiling structure at St-Laurent LRT station, even before discovering in May that some ceiling panels dusted with concrete chunks were being supported by "detached" and "heavily corroded" metal framing, directly above platforms where passengers waited for trains.

CBC News has also learned the ceiling structure wasn't checked after a "one time inspection" in February 2023, and falling debris was likely putting the public at risk for months before the tiles were pulled down in May.

These details are contained in emails and photos obtained by CBC through a freedom of information request.

St-Laurent station was closed to train service from May 17-22 so those risks could be addressed.

Hey guys, Winnipegger here. How's OC Transpo lately? I remember a year reading the fire and brimstone issues with the trains, have they been rectified as of yet? Thanks!

The irony of this question, the day that major service cuts are implemented, the result of a loss of public confidence in the system.

The trains are running more reliably, but go slow orders remain going east of downtown.

The city has a death wish with continuing bad PR. I almost threw up when one of reasons for service cuts was to deliver more reliable service. Pure garbage.

Wait for the next round of bad PR when the bus cuts come. How does continuous bad PR bring anybody to transit?

Until we have like a full year or two without issues I wouldn't say resolved. But hey, we've made it to the end of August this year without a derailment :|

Does any rail system in north america (or the world for that matter) go a year or two without issues?

We want to encourage more urban living, reduce suburban transit, then apply a fee for driving through the downtown to reach parts of the city with minimal transit service. Be careful what we hope for. It could make living in certain parts of more central Ottawa less attractive.

That's brutal man. I remember being so stoked for Ottawa when the LRT was getting going...then the Alstom issues started hitting the news. I hope this gets fixed for you guys soonest, the capital should have a worthy system. Although watching what's happening in Ottawa does make me glad Winnipeg decided to hedge its bets with BRT instead of LRT (that and the city is flat broke these days lol)

It has been a transit disaster. Ridership is so far down with so many people turned off, that we are now gutting the transit network. The biggest remaining problem is the go slow orders that have trains running at bicycle speed over a critical section just east of downtown. I don't have much confidence that this will be resolved for years, if ever. I know that the downtown bus jam needed to be resolved, but once outside of downtown, buses ran much faster, than the rail line east of downtown. The slow speed is very noticeable and affects connections to local buses.

In hindsight a bus tunnel with Electric busses would have been an ideal solution.

The bus transfer issue was aparent even before the system opened which is why I think they launched phase 2 so urgently. It isn't clear that solves the whole problem though. Bus to line 2 then transfer to line 1 and sometimes even another transfer after that is looking like at total disaster. I think they will have to keep some of the south end direct to downtown busses.
