At least for Metrotown Station, it's an island platform, so they could add outside platforms and do the Spanish solution.
At Brentwood, they can't.

At Brentwood, they can, but it would be very disruptive. You'd basically have to shut down Brentwood station and every station west of it so you'll wanna get as much stuff as you can prepared ahead of time, get everything staged, then do it as perfectly as you can.

How much disruption could there have been? There's not a lot there now, I can't imagine Lake City was particularly vibrant back then either.

Not necessarily; In theory it wouldn't be extremely different from the current guideway work happening for OMC4, but on a larger scale. New guideways will have to be built and the old ones torn down, but that could be done in stages with the north and south guideways and platforms closed and rebuilt separately. There are switches to the west of Brentwood and to the east of Holdom that could be used to single track the Skytrain during construction (but that construction would probably be on the order of 4+ years if the OMC4 work is any comparison...!!!)

Or they could do it like the Japanese did and get a big crew and everything you need for the entire project ready for use

Brentwood is a ways away from needing any platform expansions, Metrotown now is often way too crowded on the platform.

Metrotown needs a pedestrian overpass first and foremost.

Unlikely - thanks to the Patrick Condon Academy, Burnaby's obsessed with level crossings... assuming there's even something to build an overpass to if the Ivanhoe plan becomes a thing.

I seem to remember the full buildout of the 'new downtown Metrotown' is supposed to take between 80 - 100 years (which admittedly has already started, so likely slightly less than that now). So there'll be something to build to for a long time. Also the location of the overpass would be over by the other end of the bus loop and no doubt Station Square wants it.

Actually, what Metrotown needs is to pedestrianize Central Blvd by closing Central Blvd to car traffic from McKay to Sussex and only allow busses and service vehicles.

Yeah I agree, turn it into a second Granville Mall from Patterson to Imperial

Both is good - would be nice to just walk straight into Station Square.

Seems unlikely they'll invest in an overpass until they figure out the phasing of the mall redevelopment.

They must know though that the redevelopment is going to take at least 20, if not 40 years to actually happen though and having a walkway there for 20-40 years isn't really a throwaway investment. It doesn't seem like the mall owner is particularly interested in redeveloping at this point anyways - seems more like a dream from the planners.

Would love to see this but boy the chaos that would ensue from getting out of the parkades would be nuts. There'd be fist fights for sure.

Everything I've seen from Burnaby is they don't have any traffic engineers that care about pedestrians, or elected officials who care to push pro-pedestrian policies. It should be blindingly obvious that the "connection" from Metrotown SkyTrain to either of the malls is a complete pedestrian nightmare and needs fixing, and yet here we are.

It'll be fixed when they demolish the mall.

Burnaby doesn't want the overpass. Their definition of a "lively street" is making every pedestrian cross a busy intersection. Both translink and the mall wanted the overpass.

Sure it's taking forever but it sounds like a replacement will eventually come.

Quote:
The project was put on pause during the pandemic, along with related work on the Metrotown master plan with the mall’s owner and developer Ivanhoé Cambridge.

But the pedestrian bridge’s demolition is back on the menu, according to city staff.

During budget meetings in October, the City of Burnaby’s engineering department asked for $500,000 to knock down the bridge.

The money wasn’t included in the budget, but the city is tentatively anticipating demolition of the bridge next year, according to Johannes Schumann, the city’s director of neighbourhood planning and urban design.

The city has renewed conversations with Ivanhoé Cambridge to advance the demolition of the bridge and its replacement, Schumann told the NOW.

“It will be demolished in the near future,” Schumann said.

The pedestrian bridge replacement is planned to be built west of the current bridge, above the entrance to the Metrotown bus loop. Plans for the bus loop are under discussion as part of the Metrotown master plan.

The more recent view is 2022, but don't worry, as of August 2024 it is still exactly the same.
