Interesting that according to tonight's CBC news report the recently remodeled 7/11 at Watt and Talbot is on the closure list. That store was across the street from where the Ukrainian man was murdered in Dec 2023.

Perhaps the building is not owned by 7/11 and someone else and they lease it?

Interesting that the Inkster location is also pretty much brand new as well. I also question the corporation's motives for blaming crime for store closures and grabbing headlines rather than just simple sales underperformance or wanting to get out of leases etc etc. Now I expect a Walmart or two to join the crime chorus (empress or regent locations?). That will send this town into a complete frenzy!

7-11 can leave and life will go on just fine. Gas stations and private convenience stores will flourish.

Weird they’d close the new inkster one and keep the much older one at Jefferson that’s only a few blocks away.

My thought as well. While I’m sure the Portage and Lorette Ave locations also experienced some theft I’m sure it’s also due to staffing challenges and fewer people willing to pay $7 for a bag of chips anymore.

i'm starting to see some gas stations having to be "buzzed in". Soon they will be accused of "profiling" by not letting certain folks in

They're bluffing. They'd never close Talbot and Watt Sev haha

Seriously though. Weren't they already closing a bunch (all?) of the franchisee stores. Like the other one on Watt? And now this?

Does nobody remember being buzzed in to places late night? Such as Sev?

Sev: Ahh screw it. Instead of locking the door, we'll just close our business.

I would not be surprised if the core 7-11 customer is about 13-23. In that case proximity to a high school is a major influencing factor in customer sales.

I am still surprised that the Inkster location made the list. A few years back 7-11 was talking about how it wanted all its locations to has gas stations. That was around the time they closed the Regent location, which ironically formerly had a gas station on the site.

Semi relevant to the Sev talk. While Winnipeg is experiencing nowhere near the bottoming out that San Fran had due to COVID, there are some parallels.

In that case the Neil and Watt store would be a prime location for retention as its 2 blocks away from a Jr High and 2 Elementary schools and 3 blocks away from a High School.

I think the Narin/Regent location closing was Esso wanted to sell the land it was leasing to 7/11. From the public information on the sale page there was a clause the store had do be demolished within 6 months of the sale closing and no other convience store could open there.

Exactly. 7-Eleven is a store you go to when there are no better alternatives nearby—or if you're craving a Slurpee. And why does it always smell like burning plastic inside? I won't miss them.

I would completely disagree. My family and I usually hit up 7-Eleven at least 3-4 times a week. We are both professionals in our forties, each of us making way over 6 figures. We also have know a ton of similar demographics that go to 7. They aren’t what they used to be, especially the new stores. They have some great products and on the way to shopping or work they make a great stop.

Just watching CBC 6pm news and London Drugs is going in on the 2nd floor of CF Polo Park.

Shoppers is staying on the 1st floor so 2 drugstores in the mall.

Congratulations on your six-figure lifestyle! That's exactly what you need to be able to shop at 7-Eleven 4 times a week You're paying for convenience, not quality. But if Sev is going upscale, then they absolutely have no reason to tough it out in high-crime neighbourhoods anymore. They should just quietly leave instead of whining to the police.

they're taking over the area where anthropology/urban outfitters are. there's an employee on the winnipeg subreddit who said that all the employees got their notice of termination as neither store is relocating. it seems it'll still be a few months until they close, but it's very unfortunate that cf is putting out so many employees in one fell swoop.

All that kerfuffle for another London Drugs? Seems like an overall downgrade to me.

Also, the 7-11 press attention pisses me off. Like others said, they could have quietly closed those stores as there are likely several factors leading to their closing, but no of course they cry like babies and chuck out the crime thing as the sole excuse, making them look like innocent victims. Pathetic, if you ask me.
