Downtown Moncton is finally beginning to take off with high rise development, with at least four projects in advanced planning stages and one development underway (the Three Sisters).
There is a public meeting planned for one of the developments (the Gateway Towers), two 17 storey apartment buildings, right on the riverfront, connected by a pedway, with a public access path to the riverfront trail underneath, extending from Foundry Street. It is a very nice proposal.
In any event, an unholy alliance is developing to oppose this project and they plan to hijack the public meeting. This cabal will include eco-activists concerned about the river, anti-development people in general (Luddites who pine away for a Moncton from the 1950s) and, unhinged conspiracy theorists (15 minute cities!!!).
I took this picture the other day. Someone painted Grandpa Simpson on this street pole years ago, even before the Three Sisters started to go up. I thought it encapsulated the current situation with the naysayers quite well.
