Way too many ad interruptions during the Olympics opening ceremonies broadcast.

I am watching on SRC but I assume it's the same on CBC English.

It is.

I presume it is Mother Corp preparing for their defunded future under a PP government

My kids aren't at home but are watching and live chatting with me at the same time.

Right now they're chanting "WE WANT CÉLINE!"

They been doing that for years. You get a highly rated event with lots of natural breaks built in, fill it with high paying ads and make money.

Most people watching an Olympics opening want to see their country march in, a big name act, and what gimmick they use to do the torch lighting. The rest is filler, perfect for showing ads.

I was zapping between the various channels covering, and the NBC host was moved to tears.

I really enjoyed the opening ceremonies. Pretty cool way to do it. Celine was great, and the Gojira performance was rad.

Interestingly I was seeing way too many ads when streaming on my computer but switched to cbc gem and it was fine.

I couldn't get the live stream on my PC on Gem but it worked on the Fire Stick. Now the opening ceremony is archived on Gem and I can watch it on the PC.

I'm quite surprised about the love on this forum for Celine. She did an Edith Piaf song but if she was to do one of her sappy ballads or that Titanic song or the AC/DC cover she did I'd run for the mute button.

Hard to go wrong with a) Celine's voice and b) one of the best Piaf songs.

Though Celine's material in French has a bit less of a saccharine feel than in English.

Still wouldn't please Coldplay types though.

I might have said over-produced rather than saccharine, but she's always been preferable in French than in English, imo.

It's been remarked that Céline was one of the only performers that had in-ear buds which would indicate she wasn't lip synching. Many others clearly were.

I don’t think either have any control over the feed provided by Eurosport. I guess they could put different content in the ad breaks.

That's kinda funny to me as I consider Coldplay to be a similar level of over-produced saccharine music, just on a different end of the spectrum. One of my most disliked bands, though they are decently talented. To be fair I'm probably still tainted on them from the early days when they seemed to be going for a (bad) rip-off of early Radiohead.

The ad situation was the same. The CBC English commentary was awful, had to switch to SRC to get better coverage.

English CBC is really strengthening its case to get defunded.

^It was horrid. I turned the audio off until performances happened as I was watching on a second screen while working.

On another related topic...

I've been watching the Olympics a lot and I noticed that every single ad from the sponsors of Canada's Olympic team features an American song. Or at least, none of the ads that are on constant rotation on CBC and SRC (exact same ads, only the language changes) feature a Canadian song.

For example, Eye of the Tiger by Survivor and Blitzkrieg Bop (aka Hey Ho Let's Go) by the Ramones.

I'm sure that all of this goes way over the heads of anyone in a Canadian corporate boardroom, but just wanted to say that I noticed.
