I doubt the Mexico OG in 1968, or the Sydney ones in 2000, were opened with these songs...

In fact I remember the 2000 opening ceremony, and it was modern, spectacular, not pandering to old clichés of yesteryear Australia complete with convicts and bush life.

I believe the 2012 London Olympic Games opened with a Greek song from a British movie and featured a British comedian, I think. Might have been considered cliché-heavy, by some.

I gather you're referring to Chariots of Fire. Hard to imagine a song that evokes British sport better than that, even if it was from a Greek guy (hired by the Brits).

Agreed, and as you can imagine there are probably 50-100 songs that are Canadian in origin that could provoke a singalong in a bar in Quebec.

None of them would fit the bill for a Team Canada match though.

Yes! Embrace the clichés, I say! Own them!

It's like stereotypes - they exist for a reason! As I always say.

I see that French metal band Gojira is playing at the Paris opening ceremonies, alongside French-Swiss Opera singer Marina Viotti. I wonder if that is sufficiently French sans stereotype!

Interesting, there's a fight brewing between the Mayor of Hampstead and Valerie Plante:

You still see it in the area of Southern Ontario that I'm from - Mennonites set out flowers, fruit, veggies, eggs, etc at the roadside for sale on an honour system. Although it has become more common to direct cars up to the farm where sales can be dealt with in-person, but extend to things like quilts, meat products and honey.

Ah bon?

Eastern Ontario as well. The most common one is firewood with a container to put money in, but I've also seen various produce like corn, maple syrup and honey. In the towns and villages thread megadude even posted a picture of a self-serve coffee stand in Tweed.

Ironically I'm far more concerned about locking up when we are at our house in Napanee compared to Toronto (where you'd have to go through several doors to get to our unit anyways). We've had several break-in attempts, albeit very lackluster. Lots of down and out people looking for easy stuff to steal, but most aren't leaving the town proper and I doubt they'd be interested much in produce. Moreso things that are easy to sell.
