Ugh. This new design looks tickity-tack-tacky. Over-scaled and with glitzy, ugly slats. Previous design would have been human-scale and handsome (depending on execution). Condo market is probably in the toilet, so apartments makes more sense here (and with a capital partner in the community center component, I'm guessing).

The fact that there are no rendered images of the full tower makes me think they really want you to focus on the base. The tower looks less than impressive in the drawings.

RIU Plaza hotel is now open:

Say what you will about the exterior, but the interior turned out really lovely.

The exterior is growing on me. Its a nice piece of infill that will create more street activity off Michigan Ave. Glad its finally open!

I realize not everything can be preserved / adaptively reused, but the fact they saved the brick for that tiny little wall but didn't use any for the base is very funny & kinda sad. Hopefully it's being repurposed in some cool way & didn't end up in a landfill

Ha - my thoughts exactly.

It's like they're saying - oh by the way here are the bricks from the old building we tore down that was here and we did literally the absolute minimum we could think of with them just to prove to you that we couldn't care less.

They should have made a sculpture out of the bricks, because that one is ass.

those bricks are worth more on the resale market than the value in using them on this project

It’s certain the rest of the bricks and maybe timbers will end up on new buildings elsewhere in the city. When an old building next to mine was demolished, practically everything was salvaged.

I'd be surprised if we keep seeing this. With the minimum wage ramping up, it won't make sense to pay someone to sit there and clean/neatly stack all those bricks. There's still a demand for common brick for repairs, etc but the price will go up and fewer demo jobs will do the salvage.

I think it depends on the size of the site. And how MOTIVATED your workers are.
