Wow! That is really unique and interesting. I wish I had seen it when I was in Moncton. It’s like an NYC skyscraper mixed with a cathedral. I see it was finished in 1940. This and l’oratoire saint Joseph are interesting examples of early and mid 20th century churches that mimic classical cathedrals but with a modern twist. Kind of like the mishmash of styles at the Gaudi cathedral in Barcelona. Would that tower spire be the tallest building in Moncton outside the ugly antenna? Too bad it’s not closer to downtown.

I've never noticed than antenna (which somewhat reminds me of the Berlin TV Tower) or cathedral in Moncton before.

Have you ever been to Moncton? Because the antenna is taller than the Peace Tower of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. In a city of 125,000 people with almost no competing high rises.

As a kid living in Maritime cities and towns even smaller than Moncton I was always very impressed by the NB Tel tower when we visited Moncton or drove through it.

The Bell Aliant Tower (as it is now called) is the equivalent of a 35 storey building, and, aside from a couple of smokestacks in Halifax is the tallest structure in the Maritimes.

We are working on the high rise bit. For the longest time the only building with any real stature was the Assumption Place office building (20 storeys). Within five years, we should have nine buildings 15 storeys or taller, including a 30 storey apartment building (Infinity Tower), and, if rumours are to be believed, a signature tower in the Ashford/Downing development which will be even taller (40+ storeys). I will believe that one when I see it.

If that pans out, then the Bell Aliant Tower won't stick out like a sore thumb any more.

The whole point of the tower is to stick out. Granted the current height was chosen with the expectation Moncton would have a far taller skyline by now. It will have to be raised higher if Moncton starts building taller buildings or replaced.

It was built as a microwave communications tower. It is still used as such, although it is far less important now than it used to be before the satellite communications era.

It is the CN Tower of Moncton, but, without the TV broadcasting component, and, without the observation deck and revolving restaurant. Unfortunately, the tower cannot be retrofitted for these functions, and, at some point when it's utility is completely extinguished, will likely be demolished. That will be far off in the future.

It's too bad an observation deck was never included when it was built. I guess they though there was nothing to look at. Moncton is changing though.......

They will need to extend the tower or replace it if Moncton starts building 120 metre towers.

I took a River Shuttle to Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré last thuesday
