I assume it's like Tesla in that "Austin" actually means unincorporated Travis County.

wouldn't make sense to put it in unincorporated county it's just an office. they'll be downtown most likely

tesla factory was obviously best put outside city jurisdiction

The current Austin offices of X appear to be in the Littlefield building at 6th & Congress. I say "appear" because info about the location is pretty scarce.

Twitter has about 2,500 employees so they could fill a pretty big building. The Google Sail, 6G, or Springdale Green would work great for a headquarters....and would take a good chunk of vacant space off the market.

The ABJ says they have 800K sq ft in their SF HQ. But some of that has been up for sublease, so they probably won't need that much. But Google's Sail Tower has about that much sq ft.

They're actually down to about 1,300 employees.

It's hard to imagine Musk wanting to pay for a downtown lease and have to commute back and forth to Tesla. I would imagine it'll be on FM 973 as they build out that corridor.

Elon responded to that article by saying that there are 2,300 full time employees plus contractors. I couldn't find anything current so who knows the exact number today.

It'll be interesting to see what he does. X has a different sort of vibe, doesn't necessarily scream exurban manufacturing campus to me . . . though Elon does like the freedom to build what he wants, which is absolutely what he gets on the 130 corridor.

He might find some sort of justice in taking some of the old Meta space in 6G, now that I think about it . . .

FWIW, I do think the Elon exodus is a bat signal for other tech CEOs in his orbit. He's always been pretty loud about quitting California, but it's been different than the other relocation announcements. His other relocations have mostly been about regulatory environment and taxes, but the X announcement was pure culture war stuff, based on a CA ordinance that protected transgender kids. He explicitly said that, with this ordinance and others, CA isn't supporting families, and isn't a desirable place to attract workers. To me that's an important shift, and indicates there might be a techie Great Sort going on.

Has Musk answered any questions about how many Q employees currently working in SF will be required to re-locate to Austin? I could imagine a lean HQ staff in Texas with a significant Q workforce still operating in SF. It will be very interesting to see how this story develops over time. I doubt Musk will opt for a downtown Austin office tower HQ. It just isn't his style. He inherited the Twitter HQ building, formerly known as the Western Merchandise Mart, when he bought Twitter. I don't think Musk owns the SF building, but they have a lease there that runs into 2028 according to Wikipedia.

Elon Musk's X actively searching for Austin office space, sources say
The goal for the world's richest man: For all his Xs to live in Texas

By Cody Baird – Staff Writer, Austin Business Journal

....It's unclear how much space the social media company is looking to occupy, but it appears it's aiming for at least 100,000 square feet, according to multiple sources. With more than 3 million square feet of vacant office space and a 25.2% vacancy rate throughout the Austin metro, according to JLL, plenty of space is available for X to consider.....

That ABJ article also says the San Franciso offices were put on the sublease market, and that 100K Sq Ft in Austin would accommodate about 600 employees.

My sources (multiple) say Elon will reside at the top of 6G, finish out being completed now.

His brother apparently is opening a restaurant on the ground level.

Separate source says he will most likely strike a deal with Meta to sublease some/all their 6G space, and that this publicity is part of negotiations. Sublease deals are typically far better deals than open market deals. Win/win for Meta/X. And X will probably pay a fraction of the current lease amount. . Meta would be wise to take whatever he offers, IMO.

...and a large "X" on top could push 6XG over 900'.

Exclusive: Tesla leases space in RCR Taylor Logistics Park
Elon Musk-led company growing its footprint across Central Texas

https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/n...rs-austin.html

By Justin Sayers – Senior Staff Writer, Austin Business Journal
Jul 24, 2024

.....Tesla Inc. plans to take a 183,000-square-foot, rail-served building in the RCR Taylor Logistics Park that is being built by Houston-based Partners Real Estate.

It marks the latest example of the electric vehicle manufacturer's growing footprint in the Austin suburbs. The Elon Musk-led company has more than 1 million square feet combined in Kyle, Hutto and now Taylor that offer ancillary support to its massive gigafactory in eastern Travis County, which spanned 10 million square feet of floor space at last count.....
