This pretty much squares with my experience as a downtown resident. I've never felt unsafe even in the wee hours, at least in the Exchange or south of Portage. Anecdotally, of my friends, family, and colleagues, their fear of downtown scales with distance. Those from Charleswood or North Kildonan have their adrenaline pumping walking two blocks from my place to their car, but those from the core neighborhoods will happily toddle off into the night.

I can also attest to this experience, having lived downtown for 7 years.

6. Transit (yes you read that correctly)
Go into any Toronto-based page, forum, subreddit etc and you will find people complaining about the TTC just as much as people complain about transit here. We tend to forget that late busses, dirty stations, problem passengers etc exist everywhere.

Also it seems like a lot of people go on vacation and get a warped view of what transit looks like in another city. They stay in downtown TO and take short subway trips to other parts of downtown where the tourist stuff is. They ride after breakfast and avoid peak hours. Well that's not the same as commuting in from Markham or Scarborough every day. Lots of folks outside of downtown don't live near a subway station and have to take a plain old bus just like we do.

The grift is strong with GEM. $4.4 million is a lot of cash to spend on consulting for something that they basically have nothing to show for.

"We did lots of work, lots of people" whatever they said in the article. $4.4 million will get you a lot of actual work done by consultants. The regular posters in here would surely agree.

Cash-strapped First Nation spent at least $4.4M on consulting firm controlled by Winnipeg developer

Peguis chief questions expenditure; former chief says band needed the support

cash strapped Peguis? how about stop paying for kids to play at private hockey academies to the tune of $25k a year. these are not Peguis born kids, some live in prestigious Royalwood & Bridgewater. their grandparents lived on reserve at one time, the kid or their parents have never lived there but due to indian status they are still considered part of Peguis. Anyway, bring in the auditor and open the books to see why they are cash strapped

Saw this on Fireside's insta:

Anyone know about where this "Select Start" is going to be located? 8000 square feet of some sort of retro gaming... something? It's tagged as downtown Winnipeg, and the interiors look incredible...

I know some of the people working there. The lights are going to be amazing and the interior... wow.

It's located on Market Avenue in the Great West Saddlery Warehouse.

City orders demolition of crumbling McDermot Avenue warehouse to start by Monday

It is now Wednesday, and the only demolition I can see in progress is being done by entropy.

I wonder if this is another case of MB Workplace Safety & Health issuing a stop work order overriding the city, because they think a building of that age has asbestos issues?

I don't see anything on the Workplace Safety notices web page but I don't know how quickly the page gets updated with stop work notices.

It would be nice if the city and province could work out a procedure to issue demo orders on old buildings with suspect construction materials with a time line that would be acceptable to both levels.

Interesting story in the free press. What a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 🞵🞵 🞵🞵🞵🞵 this landlord is. If it's as egregious as this seems, he should be jailed.

Paywall, can't read the story. Can you provide a summary of what it says?

The Métis are going to own half of downtown soon. They just bought 333 Main, 191 Pioneer and the parking lot at parking lot 179 Pioneer. At least someone is investing in these buildings. Hopefully they build something on that parking lot but it'll probably be staff parking from what I can imagine.

Well, this morning the ravages of time were replaced by the ravages of a giant mechanical claw.

Did you notice if they were wetting it down? If so that's usually a sign of asbestos in the debris and the demo contractor has to control the dust so they don't get a stop work order.

They could have given that money to a "real estate consultant" and gotten a fancy report like some other groups do, instead of quality brick and mortar.

I'm guessing that the MMF is not tax exempt so they pay reality taxes on all their reality holdings in Winnipeg like any other investor?
