Thanks for flipping the photo, Beaudry, it makes a lot more sense now. (of course ) ha ha

Also, thanks for turning the Lankershim negative into a positive, Scott Charles.

Here is an interesting map from 1890.

Hmmm. .so why does the title include "and Water Co.'?

Here's a closer look.

Veeeery interesting.

And Lankershim with plots.

PBS-SoCal

'Lankershim' ceased to exist in 1927 when the name was changed to North Hollywood...No doubt to take advantage of the success of Hollywood on the other end of the Cahuenga Pass.

Of course there was a 'Toluca' too. (before the lake)

I ran across a snapshot today from the 1980s that piqued my interest because it reminded me of my former neighorhood of West Hollywood. . . .from eBay.

No, that isn't me.

What intrigues me is the old stone pillar(?) on the left edge of the photo. It's completely incongruous to the rest of the neighborhood.

I know that there used to be stone 'entranceways' on some city streets but I don't believe there were any in West Hollywood.

Help :whip

oops ha ha

Thanks Apollodorus and Martin Pal.

Update:

I just checked eBay. The negative sold for $22.50.

If it is Louise Brooks someone got a bargain.

Now about that tall metal flue.
.
I found what appears to be another photo of the "starlet" by checking the seller's sold listings which led
me to the Warner Hollywood Theatre, and The Larry Ceballos Revue.

It appears that she was indeed a dancer/chorus girl if the 2nd standing lady on the right side is her:

IMDB

It also appears to me that the tall metal flue is on the roof of the Warner Theatre based on this image:

Los Angeles Theatres

The 2 story building with the staircase, and some of the other buildings in the negative are still around
per the Google Steetview tour I took:

THE 'FLUE FLAPPER' MYSTERY LOCATION SOLVED

Wow! You 100% solved the location, vexedbystuff.

I took a closer at the neighboring building in the old negative and everything matches. . even the rear stairs.

Thanks for sticking with this mystery.

A mystery location for a quiet Sunday aftrnoon.

Folks, I definitely could use some help with this snapshot I happened upon on eBay earlier today.

"1965 ORIGINAL 5X7 PHOTO LAUGH MAKERS COMDEY NOW & THEN HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA"

eBay

I'm guessing that 'ual arts' on the fence is 'mutual arts'.

Here's a closer look at the marquee-like gate.

detail

The date and location are on the back of the photo.

Anyone care to help?

Let me rephrase that. . .

If I hadn't walked by this one several times in the last week I don't think I would have recognized it . . . that's the Idaho Avenue
entrance to Palisades Park in Santa Monica. This GSV shot faces in the same direction as the eBay photo, and the stones on the
right edge of the larger pillar match the eBay pic.

I don't know when they put the curb further out in the street, but that's definitely the Oceana (where Stan Laurel spent his
last years) in the background. Here's a maybe c. 1980 shot of the Oceana before it was remodeled; the flags and blue squares
above the entrance match the eBay photo:

This is the Lytton Center for Visual Arts. It was behind the famed, recently-demolished, Lytton Savings, Sunset and Crescent Heights. Seen behind is the apartment bldg at 1416 Havenhurst.

That's why the writing looked familiar. You can see some of the "LYTTON CENTER for the visual arts" sign just to the left of the bank building in this image that I posted back in 2016.

A color photo of the St. Francis Hotel at 5533 Hollywood Blvd. in the late 60s? is on eBay. I only found one post about the St. Francis, which is now the Gershwin apartments. Didn't Kenneth Anger used to live here?

Oh my, take a look at this!

historyhomes

"Stan Laurel's home is on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California. In the early 1960s the famed comedian, along with his wife, Ida,
moved into a second floor, ocean view apartment, here at the Oceana Hotel. It would prove to be his final home.
He won a special Lifetime Achievement Academy Award in 1961 while he was living here. He died on February 23, 1965
after suffering a heart attack several days earlier in his room."

And here he is waving at fans!

How cool is that!

Thanks for figuring the location of the Lytton Visual Arts Center, Beaudry. (and for the photo, Hoss) ... .but I'm still a bit confused by the eBay photograph.

The photographer appears to be standing in the middle of the entrance to the parking lot (right?). . sooooooooo what is the marquee gate for. . . an exit?

And in this aerial the buildings are where the lot should be.

Annnnnnd. . .this #2 building . . .

. .is this #2 building, right?

If so, it's blocking the view of Apt. bldg #1. . . .sooooo the parking lot in the eBay photo would have to be behind it in order to see Apt. building #1, right?

The answer is probably obvious and I'm going to be embarrassed.

Since only 4 floors of the 6+ floor apartment building are visible in the eBay image is it possible that there was rooftop parking on "Building #2"?
Or was there maybe a parking ramp at that location back in the day? It sort of looks like the marquee *might* be located over the top of a ramp to me.

From my original post, here is the lower level parking lot and gallery, so I think that vexedbystuff is correct that the marquee was at the top of a ramp. The strip mall was only built in the late-80s. The section labeled #2 by e_r is actually part of the bank - see GSV.

Let's travel down to Long Beach in search of the Doll Hospital.

eBay

There are a few clues if you look closely.

The name of the hotel might be at the top of the blade sign.

There appears to be an Italian restaurant specializing in Ravioli in the distance. ..wink

Hmm. .the name of the hotel might be longer than what's written at the top of the blade sign. (see below)

Now, about those sick dolls.
