A Mongolian Festival! There was a Greek Festival down in Redondo over the weekend as well as a Lego festival in Pasadena. Always so much going on around town. Personally, I made it to Golden Road Brewery in Glendale for the first time since COVID. Was very enjoyable! Crowd was excited since the England v Spain match was on.

Yeah, so much went on over the weekend, including the Lotus Festival, which we almost went to.

I've never been to the Golden Road Brewery, I should check it out some time!

Yesterday (Friday, 7.26.24) was my 2nd day of having to go to the courthouse for jury duty. Come with! I was assigned to the criminal courts building in downtown Los Angeles (now called the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center).

I didn't go to work obviously, but my report time to court was 10:30am. So, beforehand, I picked up breakfast for my partner and me at the bakery near the Metro station and took it home. My partner was working from home.

They didn't have what we wanted (ham and cheese sandwiches), so my partner got a roast beef, and I got a Cuban.

After a few hours, I was off to jury duty. I took the Metro.

It was day 2 of jury selection. After about 90 minutes, I was dismissed! I was almost a juror, or so I thought. Kind of a creepy case. I wouldn't have minded being a juror, but I'm sure the testimony would have been upsetting. The judge said "Juror number 10 (me), thank you for your service, you are dismissed." So I went to the jury pool room, got my certification of jury service copies, and decided to walk around downtown LA a bit and take pictures, just for kicks.

Great set of downtown pics! I looooove Grand Central Market and go there whenever I get the chance. There's a small bar next door that has a fantastic patio, too.

I got summoned for Federal grand jury duty and had to report to the US Court House you photographed... the glass cube with the jagged pattern. It's an incredible building inside. Ended up being dismissed as well.

2. Do Angelenos ever get excited or weirded out by seeing something that showed up on TV, or is it just so common that no one cares? There was an entire season of Bosch that revolved around a murder committed on the Angels Flight. If I got the chance to ride that, I'd be all in a dither. Hell, half the time when my husband and I are going to see something when we travel it's because it showed up in a show, movie, book, or video game.

That building looks like it would indeed be incredible inside. A few years ago, my dad was assigned jury duty at that federal courthouse too, but didn't have to show up---after calling for 3 or 4 days, he was dismissed.

I can only speak for myself, but I think it's quite common so nobody cares. Some commercial blocks and even residential neighborhoods of South Pasadena end up in movies and a lot of commercials. There was recently a commercial I saw, and I was like 'oh, that's right here in South Pas.' Literally a few blocks away from our apartment. But I wasn't weirded out or anything.

And a lot of car commercials get filmed in downtown LA.

I guess I cursed it when I posted that weather report pic, because basically for the past week or so we've been going through an extremely hot heat wave. I haven't been in the mood to take pictures.

Though here's one from this evening I took, right after dinner. You can see smoky haze from the huge fire burning way in San Bernardino County.

Very few random shots of a Saturday afternoon in Pasadena, 10.19.24. I've been so busy this past month and a half... when it rains, it pours, huh? Haven't really had the time to go around and randomly take pictures... and my partner broke his ankle a few days ago, so he'll have mobility issues for a bit, and needless to say we won't really be going out and about for a while.

We hung out for about an hour at a donut and coffee place we had never been to before, we're not even sure when it opened. I got a cappuccino and my partner got an iced jasmine green tea. As we started drinking them, my partner said "Did I really just pay 9 bucks for an iced green tea?" And I said "I guess so; I paid over 7 bucks for this cappuccino." Their donuts looked really tiny, and we weren't in the mood for any donuts.

Still one of my favorite buildings on the Caltech campus, the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, designed by Morphosis. It opened in 2009, and I loved it when I first saw it. I thought maybe after some time I wouldn't like it anymore, that it would look dated or silly, but 15 years later, I still love it.

A small blurb of pics.

My partner is still recovering from his broken ankle, which he broke 3 weeks ago. The doctor said that it's healing normally. And luckily my partner has been working from home, the doctor's note my partner sent to his employer says that he should work from home until the doctor gives a full release to work (my partner is usually on a hybrid WFH schedule).

On Thursday I worked a half day so that I could take my partner to the orthopedist. This is the view from the waiting room. Those aren't flying saucers in the sky, those are reflections of the ceiling lights in the waiting room.

Afterwards we went to lunch, and had dessert. We both had bittersweet chocolate sundaes. We hadn't had sundaes in a long time. This place has particularly good ones.

On Saturday while my partner stayed home, I ordered takeout for a late dinner from a place we had never been to. Decided to take a chance on this place, it's open pretty late.

The place is called New York Chicken & Gyro. It's been our experience that often a restaurant in SoCal with "New York" in its name leaves something to be desired. I ordered two chicken gyros to go. The gyro itself was okay, but the "white sauce" it came with was a bit weird, it tasted like it had buttermilk or something. My partner had the same opinion. "Why can't they just use real yogurt?" he said, then he asked "What is this place called again?" I told him, and he said "No wonder." Haha! Luckily, the white sauce was on the side. We didn't use the rest of it. The place only has 4 locations in SoCal, but it was opened by a family from Queens, NY or something.

Since my partner is still recovering from his broken ankle, all wearing a boot and everything, we've only been doing takeout for dinner; since his accident, we've only eaten out twice. With the cost of groceries being all high and everything, it's worth it just to eat out or do takeout.

So while my partner's been working from home and staying home, I've been picking up takeout. Come with me the past 2 evenings to pick up our food!

Two evenings ago... I parked the car on this street, and walked a few blocks to the restaurant.

On Saturday (11.16.2024), I went on a little excursion with my parents to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. We hadn't been there in a long time.

Artist John Nava did the tapestries for the Cathedral. This is only part of the ones titled "Communion of Saints." My understanding is he used real models with accurate ethnicities to portray the saints as well as the laity, mixed up in line with the saints.

The model for the Virgin Mary on this tapestry was a woman in her 20s that artist John Nava has known most of her life, a DACA recipient who he said was excited to know that her face would be used but who will remain anonymous.
