Local star Konnor Griffin secures $11,000 for local Jackson ball field

Video Link

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. —
Jackson Prep star Konnor Griffin was expected to make some headlines this month. We thought it would come next week, when the LSU commit will likely be picked early in Sunday's MLB draft.

Griffin instead made some waves six days early, when he presented an $11,000 check to the president of the North Jackson baseball and softball fields on Monday.

"I think it's going to be immeasurable; the benefit that it's going to bring to our kids," said North Jackson Youth Baseball and Softball president Smith Boykin. "I remember from being a young guy out here when we used to have the Jackson Mets across the street, but they've got somebody in real life that they know has gone to school with them and their friends. They're gonna remember him for the rest of their life."

Griffin won the grant from Gatorade. He automatically secured the first $1,000 after claiming Mississippi's first ever national Gatorade Player of the Year award. He won the other $10,000 by submitting a video about why Gatorade should fund his cause. The sports drink brand then picked Griffin over other Player of the Year winners.

"The little fields that you see when you're passing in; I remember playing wiffle ball games out there while I was watching my older brother play," Griffin said. "This has a place in my heart. I've played here a good bit, and being able to help out and give back to the place that helped me get to where I'm at is super cool."

Griffin said he plans to continue to give back as he continues in his career, either in college or with the pros in the MLB.

Demolition underway at abandoned property on Commerce Street in Jackson

Efforts are continuing to fix the city-wide issue.
Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - For over a year, a property right next to WLBT’s studio deteriorated and became nothing but a homeless encampment which became a significant public safety problem.

Now, action is underway to demolish that property on Commerce Street.

“I am so happy this building is being torn down,” Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said.

Chief Wade couldn’t be more excited after the start of the demolition at the abandoned property, which has caused major issues in the past with law enforcement.

But how did we get here?

A statement from property owner Buzz Miles’ family says, “After his sudden passing in January of 2023, our elderly mother inherited his properties on Commerce Street.”

It would go on to say, “Despite her best efforts, she was unable to keep the homeless population from moving in and creating an encampment.”

And that it did.

Over the past year, Jackson Police received multiple calls, including some from WLBT employees, dealing with situations at the property, with some even leading to arrests.

However, even with the building gone now, Police Chief Joseph Wade knows the work is not done.

“We have to address these properties. As you ride around South Jackson, specifically, you may have some nice homes on a street, but then you’re going to have those dilapidated properties on that street as well. It is decreasing their property value. It’s inviting a criminal element or element in their community that they do not want,” Chief Wade said.

Chief also highlighted efforts from Councilman Ashby Foote with the creation of an abandoned property task force. He believes that teamwork is the only way to resolve this issue.
“This is what we have to do. I think we can get more done together than we can working apart. Working together, collective efforts, communicating, talking, taking next steps together and we can all reap the benefits of this property being torn down, and also the many others that need to be torn down across the city of Jackson,” Chief Wade said.

This is just one of the thousands of abandoned buildings in the capital city that have not been torn down, but city leaders are hopeful of what the new abandoned property task force will bring to Jackson once those positions are filled.

What's that being built next to Broad Street Baking Company in Jackson's Banner Hall?

A sign announcing the opening of Levure, “a natural wine shop from the team at Elvie's," hangs above a door in Banner Hall in Jackson on Friday, July 5, 2024. The location formerly housed the long-time Banner Hall occupant the Bridal Path, before it moved to Madison.

Quote:
A new specialty wine store from the Hunter Evans tree is being built and is expected to be completed in the coming months.

Hunter Evans, 34, who was recently nominated for a 2024 James Beard Award and is the owner of the nationally renowned restaurant Elvie's, will also be the new owner of The Mayflower.

He said that after some cleanup and reorganization, he expects The Mayflower to reopen in later this month, July. Evans and his business partner Cody McCain will run the operation.

Now, he and Brandi Carter, along with McCain, will be opening a new specialty wine store called Levure, which will be in the former Bridal Path location in Jackson's Banner Hall next to Broad Street Baking Company and below Lemuria.

"This is going to be all small-production wines, most of which five or fewer people are making," said Carter, who is a native of Meridian but has been in charge of wines with Elvie's since its inception. "These are natural wines without a lot of manipulation."
Evans said the approach to Levure will be much like the way Elvie's is approached.

"Brandi has been with Elvie's since the beginning," he said. "We collaborated a lot on the cocktails at Elvie's and that has kind of translated into this, using small-production wines in conjunction with the seasons. In doing that, she was just opened up to this world of wine makers and all of the cool stuff that they are doing."

Work is ongoing Friday, July 5, 2024, to transform the former location of the Bridal Path in Banner Hall in Jackson, to the Levure, “a natural wine shop from the team at Elvie's.” The Bridal Path has moved to Madison.
The Elvie's wine list has transformed in the four years it has been open based on Carter and her growth and education within the world of wine.

"As we have transformed at Elvie's, people had a lot of questions and that led us to believe that a wine store that specialized in these natural wine's would be successful," Evans said. "It was just a natural evolution to create this space for Brandi's knowledge and her passion."

Carter said having a specialty wine store is somewhat of a challenge because of the restrictions of the Mississippi Alcohol and Beveridge Commission.

"Anything that is slightly unique is special order because of how much you have to buy. It gets pretty technical," Carter said. "I find specific producers that I do want to sell their wine and then either we will purchase that $1,000 minimum as Elvie's and put them in our wine clubs as first-to-market or I will contact the different sommeliers in Mississippi or different retailers around the state and ask them to grab a case here and there just to meet that initial minimum."

Hunter and Carter are expecting the opening of Levure to be in October and are excited about the store and the location.

"This has been in the works for three years. So, we have been talking about it for a long time and people have known that," Evans said. "So, when this location came open, we had a few people come to us and say it would be the perfect place for us."

JTRAN receives $13 million for modernizing fleet

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Jackson’s transportation service has received a $13.7 million grant.

U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson said JTRAN was awarded the grant through the U. S. Department of Transportation FY24 Bus & Bus Facilities Grant Program. He said the funding will support the Low-Emission Bus Fleet Modernization Project, which aims to replace, expand, and modernize JTRAN’s existing fleet with hybrid and propane-powered buses.

“Today, 117 communities, including Jackson, are receiving the good news that their transit buses are being modernized and their commutes improved through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The Biden-Harris Administration is helping agencies across 47 states replace old buses running on dirty, expensive fuels by delivering modern and zero-emission buses, manufactured by American workers, that will connect more people to where they need to go.”

“This grant is a testament to our commitment to improving public transportation in Jackson and ensuring that our transit systems are efficient, reliable, and sustainable. The modernization of our bus fleet will not only benefit the environment but also enhance the quality of life for our residents,” said Thompson.

A film about Mississippi John Hurt

Quote:
The film dedicated to Mississippi John Hurt was long overdue, it was actually supposed to be released last year. But this time, it's the right one! Directed by Jamison Stalsworth, A Man Called Hurt – The Life & Music of Mississippi John Hurt is well and truly finished. It was even presented last month at the San Francisco Documentary Festival, and is part of the selection of the next JXN Film Festival (July 21 to 26, 2024) in Jackson, Mississippi.

This rewards the efforts of the granddaughter of singer-guitarist and founder of the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation, Mary Frances Hurt, who is among the speakers in the film along with Rory Block, Andy Cohen, Guy Davis, Dom Flemons, Alan Lighty, John Sebastian, Happy Traum, Valerie and Benedict Turner.

Let's hope that the film is now accessible to the public, an avowed objective of the foundation and the production company (Draft), even if no date has been put forward for the moment. In any case, this is excellent news four and a half months after the destruction in a fire of the museum dedicated to the bluesman in Avalon...

Preliminary plans revealed for new Gluckstadt Park

The mayor and Board of Aldermen were recently presented with a conceptual drawing for the new Gluckstadt City Park.(City of Gluckstadt)
Quote:
GLUCKSTADT, Miss. (WLBT) - Although it’s still preliminary, a new public park planned for Gluckstadt appears to be taking shape.

More details of Gluckstadt Park were presented to the mayor and Board of Aldermen at their regular Tuesday meeting.

According to drawings, the park will include a lake, walking trail, playground, pavilion, and stage, as well as a nature trail that will run in the wooded area behind and beside the lake.

Mayor Walter Morrison said the drawing was just an initial concept, with city officials still determining how to best use the land and what the improvements would cost.

“Ultimately, we’ll have to figure out what it’s going to cost to get built, and we’re working with a private entity who’s going to help us,” he said. “Nothing’s been adopted yet.”

The concept comes just months after two longtime Gluckstadt families donated approximately 20 acres along Calhoun Station Parkway to develop the space.

Meanwhile, in the last two months, the city has been working to get the public’s input, with a private consultant holding several focus group meetings in May and June to gather data.

That information was presented to the mayor and board on Tuesday as part of a “Community Feedback Report.”

According to that information, residents are interested in seeing the construction of a paved walking trail, multipurpose sports courts, and playground equipment. The report also showed that focus group members were “excited about the possibility of a splash pad.”

Morrison said some of those ideas could be incorporated in the final design, but again said it’s early in the process.

As for the park’s construction, Morrison is hopeful work could begin soon. “I’d like to have it done by the end of the year,” he said. “Now, whether that’s feasible or not remains to be seen. The contractors will have to tell us that.”

STATE LOOKING FOR SITE TO CONSTRUCT NEW ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONTROL WAREHOUSE

Quote:
Plans for a new Alcoholic Beverage Control warehouse that the Legislature authorized to be located “on a suitable site within 50 miles of the state Capitol building” are moving ahead.

“The Department of Revenue has been looking at different sites around the metro area,” said Trey Lamar, a Republican who represents District 8 (Lafayette and Tate counties) in the state House of representatives and chairs the House Ways and Means Committee.

The Department of Revenue must have a site for the new warehouse and a construction contract for the facility executed by October, he said.

The Alcoholic Beverage Control, part of the Mississippi Department of Revenue, is responsible for the wholesale distribution of wine and liquor to package stores and restaurants in the state.

Ruan Transport Corp., which is based in Des Moines, Iowa and specializes in transportation, warehousing and logistics, began operating the ABC warehouse, located in the South Madison County Industrial Park in Gluckstadt, in June 2023 after winning the state contract.

For several years, liquor stores found it difficult to fill their shelves because the ABC warehouse was underfunded while at the same time the number of orders was rising. The onset of the pandemic saw orders skyrocket as many Mississippians turned to wine and other alcoholic beverages.

The hiring of Ruan Transport was expected to help with the logistics problems and the construction of a new, modern warehouse will make more room available for storage.

“The biggest complaint is that the existing facility is old and not big enough to meet the demand,” Lamar said. “The ceiling is not tall enough. There’s not enough floor space and the facility is not equipped with the modern equipment it needs.”

In 2022, the Legislature authorized $55 million in state revenue bonds that could be issued to plan, build a new administrative building and warehouse and equip it. After building materials and construction costs increased, the Legislature this year authorized an additional $40 million in state revenue bonds for the project, Lamar said.

Last year, the state implemented what is known as a bailment fee on each case of liquor or wine a manufacturer stores at the warehouse, Lamar said. The bailment fee increased from $1 per case to $1.50 per case on July 1.

“The $1.50 bailment fee will go into a fund and be used to pay the note on the state revenue bonds that are issued for the facility,” Lamar said. “That ensures our general taxpayers are not paying for the facility. What that means is my grandmother, who doesn’t buy liquor, isn’t going to have her taxes going to pay for the warehouse.”

The state Department of Finance and Administration Bureau of Building, Grounds and Real Property Management is accepting proposals for the design and construction of the new warehouse. Sealed bids should be submitted no later than 2 p.m. Central Standard Time on July 11.

A groundbreaking on the first phase of construction is desired on or before Feb. 15, 2025 and substantial completion is expected on or before Aug. 15, 2026, according to the request for proposals.

The current ABC warehouse is 211,000 square feet, has 171,150 square feet of non-conditioned warehouse space for product storage and dock space and 24,200 square feet of climate controlled conditioned space for wine storage. The facility also contains two levels of office space and a small storage area.

The new warehouse will have 300,000 square feet to 350,000 square feet, Lamar said. The ceilings will be much higher to maximize storage space and a modern picking system so orders can be more efficiently filled, he said.

The initial warehouse facility was built in 1983 and the climate-controlled area for wine was constructed in 2003.

As of February 2024, there are 2,434 active licensees/permittees in the state being serviced from the warehouse.

Plans call for selling the current warehouse after the new one is operational. “We won’t need it anymore,” Lamar said.

Lamar said the House of Representatives has passed legislation several times that would allow the state to get out of the liquor distribution business but “the Senate wouldn’t go along with it.”

Walter Michel, a Republican who represents District 25 (Hinds and Madison counties) in the state Senate, maintained that legislation could solve some of the distribution problems that the warehouse faced without having to expand its size or hire additional employees.

He has introduced in several legislative sessions a bill that would allow grocery stores to sell wine with a higher alcohol content than what they already sell and another bill that would let wineries direct ship product to consumers, grocery stores and liquor stores. Those bills have been unsuccessful.

Assisted living home goes to G’stadt

A rendering shows what The Oaks, an upscale assisted living home for elderly adults with disabilities, will look like in Gluckstadt.
Quote:
GLUCKSTADT — After withdrawing plans for construction of a 15-bed assisted living facility at historic Livingston following opposition of nearby residents, developers found a new home here and received unanimous approval from the Mayor and Board of Aldermen on Tuesday to proceed with the project.

Chad Phillips and his wife, Crystal Gardner-Phillips, are the owners of The Oaks, an upscale healthcare home for elderly adults with disabilities.

“This project has been a long way in the making,” Chad Phillips told aldermen on Tuesday. “It’s been a challenging year-and-a-half.”

The Phillips initially planned to build the facility at Livingston and received approval from the Madison County Planning & Zoning Commission. However, the project was opposed by the Mannsdale-Livingston Historic Preservation District.

The Madison County Board of Supervisors discussed the project multiple times, sending it back and forth from committee to committee without taking action before the Phillips ultimately withdrew their petition and sold the property.

Chad Phillips, who is the RN supervisor at Madison Health and Rehab, told aldermen he’s going to be an advocate for these seniors, jokingly referring to his building as a sorority house for the Golden Girls.

“I know that, personally, God’s put it in my heart to take care of these older, disabled individuals in a very unique way,” he said. “I’m an advocate for these people. I believe it’s a beautiful facility.”

Aldermen unanimously approved a conditional use permit for the project, which will be located on five acres of a 15-acre parcel on the southeast corner of Calhoun Station Parkway and Sowell Road.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Mayor Walter Morrison said. “Thank you for bringing this to us.”

UMMC announces new location for ambulatory clinics in Ridgeland

UMMC Colony Park South will house several ambulatory clinics, beginning in 2025. UMMC will lease about 65,000 square feet in the three-story building across the street from UMMC Colony Park North, currently under construction.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is leasing brand-new medical office space directly across from the future ambulatory surgical center on Colony Park Boulevard in Ridgeland.

The surgical center will make up UMMC Colony Park North, while this installment will establish UMMC Colony Park South. This move aims to enhance the patient experience by providing a more accessible and convenient location for many of its ambulatory clinics.

Jones

"Patients expect to see their primary care physicians in free-standing, community-based clinics like this," said Dr. Alan Jones, associate vice chancellor for health affairs. "Our main campus, while comprehensive, can be challenging to navigate. This new clinic space is designed to streamline the patient experience, offering easier access and more accessible parking. Our goal is for patients to enjoy a seamless visit, with minimal disruption to their daily schedules."

UMMC will occupy approximately 65,000 square feet of the medical office space, sharing the three-story building with Jackson Heart. The new facility will house several UMMC ambulatory clinics, including orthopaedics, internal medicine, neurology, and physical and occupational therapies.

Additionally, it will cater to specialty surgeries such as plastic surgery and urology. The site will also feature a comprehensive medical laboratory and advanced radiological services, including MRI, CT scans, mammography and ultrasound.

Hall

“We are excited about this new location,” said Dr. Michael Hall, professor and chair of the Department of Medicine. “This multispecialty clinic should make it easier for our patients to access different providers and specialties without some of the complexities that our large main hospital campus brings. This should facilitate comprehensive, high-quality care in a new facility that also provides unique training opportunities for our students, residents and fellows.”

While many services are transitioning to the new location, certain specialty clinics will remain at the UMMC Pavilion. These include transplant services, neurosurgery, wound care, and medicine specialties like gastroenterology, rheumatology and infectious disease.

The relocation of the Medical Center’s clinics to this new site is scheduled for January 2025, when they will begin welcoming patients.
