This whole vision for the WFCU centre and area that Eddie Francis sold us never came to fruition. The hotels and major franchises never came. We are basically building a sporting destination in the middle of a neighbourhood with no businesses in the immediate area.[/QUOTE]

I live on the East End and building WFCU outside of the core was the dumbest move regardless of what some East Enders think. WFCU is now 16 years old, every year is another step closer to having a new Spitfires Arena downtown, if our City Council isn’t run by air heads at that time in the future.

I'm not sure how true this is, but I was told the city originally wanted to put the WFCU Centre where Adventure Bay is- but Caesar's said they'd pull out if the city put a competing stadium that close to them (in fear of losing events from the Coliseum). So they put Adventure Bay there, and the WFCU went where it is now. Again, I was simply told this and have no political ties, so it could all be hearsay.

It doesn’t surprise me that Caesars wouldn’t want an arena so close by. The Colosseum and WFCU have very similar capacities for concerts, so there would have been direct competition between the two venues.

I don’t see a downtown arena happening for a very long time, but I would eventually like to see it happen since WFCU is in such a trash location. I think the key would be something ~10,000 seats (similar to Budweiser Gardens in London) so the arena wouldn’t be attracting the same kind of concerts as Caesars anyway. The issue right now is that Windsor absolutely does not need an arena that big (the Spits only fill up 2/3 of WFCU regularly these days) and probably won’t for another 20-30 years. Windsor needs to focus on getting more development downtown before worrying about something like a new arena.

I don't think a Hockey arena will make it back downtown for years or decades to come. I did like the idea by the spencer/butcher group for the old Windsor arena to be renovated for our Basketball franchise. Although the city has designated that site for future housing.

Noticed a large plot of land being cleared behind the Home Depot on the east end next to the Serbian centre. Couldn't find any information about it so I'm wondering if it's just being prepped for sale. I keep hearing about getting another costco but I highly doubt that.

Interesting, putting a Costco right next to the Walmart seems wrong but who knows. Lakeshore area is ripe for a Costco.

Looks like it will be a commercial development consisting of approximately 275,000 sq.ft. of gross floor area over multiple buildings. Catherine Street to be extended to the development with additional access from Tecumseh rd.
More details at the open house planned for July 23, 6-7pm at the Serbian Centre.

Supposedly... the company building the Hyatt hotel is the same one who is building the Inspiration Tower at Wyandotte and Ouellette and once the hotel construction is done, is when they'll begin the construction of that tower downtown.

I hope that’s true, I’ve been waiting patiently for some of the proposed DT towers and other proposals to get started.

I recall seeing activity on their city application earlier this year. Hopefully more GTA developers actually build in the core.

Noticed work has started on the 9 storey in forest glade next to the tim hortons off Lauzon pkwy.

Construction has also started on the 10-11 story building on riverside drive next to the old ford power station. There's a decent pit already dug and pile driving looks to have started at least as of last friday

I came here to say that, because I forgot to post that a few days ago as I drove by I saw shovels are in the ground now. Riverside between the blocks of Belleview and Pratt.

$38 million for Ojibway wildlife overpass

$38 million for Ojibway wildlife overpass
https://www.windsorontarionews.com/

A wildlife overpass over the west end’s Ojibway Parkway and ETR train tracks would cost $38 million. The next step is a 30-day review period for a completed environmental study. Study funding is coming partly from the Gordie Howe Bridge’s community benefits plan. The “ecological” overpass would allow wildlife to cross between two natural areas on either side of the Parkway/ETR tracks - the Black Oak Heritage Park on the west and Ojibway Park on the east. “This objective further supported goals of reducing wildlife mortality and increasing driver safety for the heavily travelled Ojibway Parkway corridor that sees approximately 20,000 vehicles per day,” a city report says. An engineering consultant prepared four location options, the best being a span that crosses south of Broadway St. It would also include a landscaped bridge. The overpass would be 50 metres wide, the “large width” to meet “the movement needs of a broad spectrum of wildlife - large and small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.” As well, “microhabitat features and vegetation placement will be designed to enhance crossings by bats, birds, invertebrates, and plants.” No humans will be allowed to use it. The cost would be $38 million in today’s dollars. Some private property would have to be acquired. The Gordie Howe Bridge authority is paying $250,000 towards the study and Parks Canada is kicking in $150,000 for a total of $400,000. No decision has been made to move forward with actual construction. The report says the intent is to seek funding “from environmental organizations, provincial and federal levels of government” with the balance from the city.
