A hotel on or near Temple's campus would also do extremely well. If you're a parent of a Temple student, then your only on-campus option is The Conwell Inn. I would love to see Temple demolish the Student Health Services building at 1700 North Broad and replace it with a nice hotel fronting the NW corner of Broad and Cecil B. Moore.

These shots were taken around April 1986. How do I know? The trees are freshly bloomed in these shots, and One Commerce Square (seen under construction) didn't top out until June 6, 1986. One Liberty Place is roughly four to eight stories high at the time of these photographs, just before it poked into the skyline

These images come from a book published by Bill Harris, this was published at the end of 1986. However he has another one that was published in 1990, and features One Liberty Place. I hope there's more out there

Man, the gentlemen's agreement really held us back. Provincial thinking at its worst. Philly doesn't look remotely as big as it did in those pictures. I wonder if anyone knows about pre-Liberty Place attempts to break it. I know about Louis Kahn's City Tower, which would have been ugly but part of me wishes it was built just for the sake of architectural revolution.

It's not bad. I would have preferred a Wendy's but... Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I think a Walmart with a big parking lot, a Wendy's drive thru, and a Crown Fried Chicken would've been better but to each their own. Jk that is an incredible rendering, is that the Durst project or a separate proposal??

LOL.

I was just in that Walmart parking lot yesterday while my lady ran into grab something quick. It is absolutely wild how Philly has screwed the river front.

Yeah I mean that was a cool one but that development group had never built anything close to this. It was a bid from Penn's Landing Community Partners who were made up of:
Republic Family of Companies.
Keystone Property Group.
Hersha Hotels & Resorts.
Parkway Development.
Toll Brothers.

Durst proposal was still the coolest looking one IMO. The tallest looks to be around 700 feet. A 700 footer on the waterfront would look so awesome, especially coming over the bridge.

Yea it would be amazing. We have a great opportunity to make a super recognizable second skyline from Camden and I hope we don't mess it up. If I recall correctly the Durst proposal also had a really cool design for the affordable housing portion of it to the south of those towers. The roofs created a twisting design between the six buildings I believe. Add some vibrant night lighting to all of those towers and we have a new iconic view from Camden.

It probably never made sense for the Durst project to start until the park was substantially complete anyway, and especially so with interest rates where they are now. Hopefully by the time 2026 rolls around and the park is most of the way done, interest rates are lower and Durst can get started with the project so that when it delivers, it can attract tenants with a beautiful park next to it.
