KV really needs its own thread… unless we’re amalgamating?

Here is an update from the city CAO at tonight’s council meeting.

- the city under the housing accelerator fund has to issue permits for 1,124 units over the next three years. Building permits have been issued for 334 residential units so far. Meeting 30% of overall target.

- For affordable target the minimum is 9%, (101 units of the 1,124), permits issued so far for 47 affordable units. So meeting 46% of the 3-year target so far.

- Missing middle housing target is 164 units, permits issued for 84 of the missing middle. So far tracking at 51% of the overall 3-year target.

- Residential multi-unit target is 805 units, permits issued for 231 units so far. Meeting 28% of the three year target.

- 28 permits issued for other building forms like single detached homes, mobile homes, etc.

- Overall performing quite well being only the early days of the housing accelerator fund he said.

Regarding the public spaces on the boardwalk, he was asked if he could provide a date for completion. He said he couldn't because of weather conditions, etc, could affect work but "sometime in this summer of 2024" he said chuckling.

For his updates on the other projects, there wasn’t really any new information given. Just work is ongoing basically.

I wonder if this is a first phase. You could do something very similar to the west, just uphill, on the same PID, accessed off the end of Michael Crescent. Could probably fit something else on the corner of Nason and Michael, too.

West siders apparently up in arms over the proposed expansion of Lorneville Industrial Park into this lot (the pieces between Lorneville Road and the highway) https://paol-efel.snb.ca/paol.html?v=1.0.37&lang=en&pan=06805123

Not sure what there is to be upset about. It would be nice to see some of the wetlands in the northwest of the property (Frenchman's Creek watershed) ceded to the nature conservancy next door, plus the coastal strip, but if you need to clearcut and level for development, between a highway, an industrial park, a power plant, and among wind turbines, seems like the place to do it.

My only question is, what's driving this? A large prospective tenant who needs barge and/or immediate highway access? The existing Lorneville Industrial Park still has tons of lots, and the east side parks are similarly open.

I haven't seen anything concrete about this actually happening, but enough locals seem incensed that it must be somewhat real. Any scoops?

Russians finally launching their attack???

When I was a kid growing up in Charlottetown in the 1960s, they used to have monthly tests of the air raid siren. Such a spooky sound. It would give me the willies.

I saw someone mention locals are upset because an EV battery plant is apparently being planned for the area. Looking online, there is an article from March this year about a startup company getting funding and they mention they plan to build an EV battery factory here in Saint John.

If true, that's actually a big deal! I hope it is true.......

Yeah an EV battery factory would be cool. Not sure what's with opposition to it. Hardly in anyone's backyard or virgin forest.

Cause nobody likes to 🞵🞵🞵🞵 on good news than SJ’ers. As for start up, the only article I’m aware of is Victory Advanced Technologies on Tim St that want to build electric motors. Unless I completely missed an article about another start up involved in EV batteries. If it is an EV battery plant, they cost $10B + with an intensely complicated supply chain - so doubtful a start up would be involved.
But I think something is up because they are very specific on certain properties including taking a piece of Alloy St - that’s pretty specific for just wanting to expand the park which is already mostly unoccupied overall. An EV plant would be interested in that area if they can be carbon neutral - wind farm can be expanded and maybe two or three wind turbines can power the plant. Also - why is Dillon Consulting involved in this process which really is just a civic matter?

It was DP World/the port testing their emergency evacuation alert system. They just posted about it on social media.

Quote:
"This afternoon, our partners at DP World Saint John undertook testing of their emergency evacuation notification system. As a result, their alarm sounded intermittently over a 30-minute period at the West Side Container Terminal.

Port Saint John has been advised that in the future, DP World will give 24-hour advance notice to ensure testing of this nature is communicated directly to our community".
