When did I say they weren't Jewish? Your argument is akin to saying that the Quebecois have citizenship and land rights in France, and anyone who becomes Quebecois now or in the past does as well. It's almost a stronger claim since the Quebecois immigrated far more recently than 2000 years ago.

I didn't say that was the only period Jewish people existed there. I referenced the last time they held power in that area, prior to modern Israel, from my understanding. The long and complicated history of the region includes many groups, of which Jewish people were only one. The last time they formed a majority was in the 300s. Palestinians were also Canaanites, as genetic studies show.

We wouldn't even know about it if not for the meticulous genealogy records of the Brits. Jews, by contrast, continue to this day to hold a feast in January celebrating the flowering of olive trees, to bang together palm leaves and lemons at their harvest festival, to spend 7 weeks in spring (corresponding to the vegetative phase of cereal crops in the ME) praying for rain, and celebrate dates, figs, olives, and pomegranates as sacred fruits. These land-oriented traditions are almost comically out of place in Europe, yet they are kept.
None of this justifies the current situation or the history of Israeli colonization. Ethnocentric beliefs motivate all sorts of things, from the Nazis to the war in Ukraine. They aren't valid justifications for committing atrocities.

Denial of Jewish roots in the region and painting Israel as a European settler society in the same bucket as America or Canada or Australia is what's anti-Semitic.
The current Jewish state in Israel is the product of European colonization. It was literally given to them by Europeans to colonize. Nothing justifies what has transpired. I don't have the right to brutalize people living in a place my ancestors left 2000 years ago, no matter what my belief system is. Period.

Contemporary Israeli culture is way more shaped by these Middle Eastern migrants than by the "European Jews". It's not really accurate at all to characterize Israel as a "European settler society" even if we accept your anti-Semitic negation of Jewish history as true, and classify Ashkenazi Jews as white Europeans.
100 years ago the area was 10% Jewish. Whether people come from Europe and are therefore European or from Morrocco doesn't change the colonization narrative. European Jews are both white and European. And Jewish. Also, they are estimated to be 32% of the population, not a small minority as you say. Plus, that figure doesn't include the large number of people who came from the USSR.

The ideological backings of Zionism just don't add up. It was flimsy then and now. Many Jewish people agree with that and have since Israel's founding. Nevertheless, Jewish people have built lives there. I don't know what the answers are to these problems. I certainly don't promote that the Palestinians treat them as they have been treated, although I understand the sentiment. Using Zionist arguments to justify a colonial presence will never paper over these problems though. The reality of the past must be reckoned with.

Sure the PQ didn't care that anglos huffed and puffed, but they didn't care that some people in Saguenay huffed and puffed as well.
I remember the PLQ tried to demerge Gatineau too. It would sound almost bizarre today.

1- According to Statcan the majority of the population in Mont-Royal are French speakers (43% speak French at home vs 28% who speak English, as per 2021 census). So why would a municipality where the majority of the population is French-speaking erase French street signs?

2- French is the only official language in Québec. Is it even legal for a municipality in Québec not to have French signs??

PS: The guy in the video doesn't know how to pronounce "arrêt" by the way. The final t is not pronounced. Final consonants in French are pronounced ONLY if they are followed by a "e" (which doesn't stand for a vowel, but is only there to tell you the preceding consonant must be pronounced). There are of course a few exceptions (sac, vrac, truc, etc), but the general rule is simple and works for most words: final consonant without a "e" after it --> not pronounced. Final consonant followed by a "e" --> pronounced (and the "e" stands as a reminder to pronounce the consonant, not as a sound in itself).

No it wasn't. Nobody "gave" it to them. The British governed the territory as a colony and tried to balance competing Jewish and Arab claims. When they couldn't negotiate a future for the territory, they just pulled out and left everyone there to their own devices. The resulting power vacuum created a civil war that the Jewish population won, and they declared independence. Nobody "gave" Israel to the Israelis.

The answer is what every serious proposal since 1936 has recommended, and what the entire world supports: the two state solution. It will take work to get there, and there's very real security risks for Israel to withdraw from the West Bank that need to be addressed first. But it remains the answer.

The best way for the West to advance this outcome is, in fact, to properly defend Ukraine. Show that Western security guarantees have teeth.

Mont-Royal could have lost the right for English status if they didn't preserve it, which pretty much every community in Québec that qualified, did.

Otterburn Park south of Montreal is 7.2% English yet is still recognized as bilingual.

Israel shows no willingness to cooperate in a way that will allow this to happen. Palestinians will continue to suffer until Western powers propping up the Israelis start acting from a place of greater morality. They must equally prioritize guaranteeing security for the Palestinians and stop turning a blind eye to Israel's crimes. Accountability for those in more powerful positions is the only way forward.

Bilingual is not the same thing as erasing French signs. Why would anyone do that in a municipality where the majority of the population is Francophone? Are the Francophone city councilors there kind of masochistic or something??

Is this rich Allophone and Francophone voters betting that it's English status adds to the cache and helps their property values?

It probably has to do with $$ for sure, and placating the old anglo taxpayers.

Don't worry, New Brisavoine - the rest of them will be gone soon enough and assimilated.

Why would people spray paint over the 'ch' part a street sign?

Why would people slap 'arrêt' on a stop sign?

Why does the Impératif français leader look like Santa Claus, and have his headquarters in the Anglo-saxon bastion that is Aylmer?

It's called setting boundaries. Everybody need them, even couples.

Did anyone notice that 43% is a plurality, not a majority?

BTW it could have been that around de-merger time Ville Mont-Royal had more anglos than francos, and that things have changed since then.

My kid lived near there until this summer and all municipal signs are French first with English second. Except for stop signs because as we know STOP is a French word.

Wow, talk about making up your own narrative. Israelis have wanted peace since day one. And on day one they were attacked. Then attacked again and again and again. Israel has tried many times its documented history and also documented are terrorist attack after terrorist attack after terrorist attack.

You can learn about some of the attacks here in this comprehensive listing of them. But I’m sure you won’t even open it.

You believe only the Israeli version of reality. It’s fairy tale we’ve been fed. There are other sources available that you could seek out with an open mind, if you wanted to. It’s totally up to you. Have a nice day.
