I saw a drone picture of the new Buffalo 🐃 Crossing centre on McGillivray at Fort Whyte, and the new pedestrian and cycling bridge across the lake. It's going to be a game changer for the nature centre. Should be open in late fall I believe.

I don't mind how the towers look, but I assume it's the same or similar design as the tower at 221 Stradbrook which had the rooftop fire that displaced everyone in the building? That building is still empty almost a year later, apart from the restaurant on the ground floor (I live nearby and pass it everyday), and I personally know people who were displaced. Yes, it sounds like a freak accident, but I do hope developers or the city or whoever have things in place to prevent things like that from happening again in similar builds.

My brother is working on the restoration. It's coming along nicely and they're on schedule but he maintains they should have let the top floor burn. It would have been cheaper and the fire could not spread. The water damage on the 6 floors below is insane.

Does anyone know if there are any plans floating around out there with what to do about the Portage Ave block downtown that contains all seemingly abandoned buildings... the Boyd, the old Don's Photo location, and the old Scientific Marvel location. The stretch to me is the biggest eyesore down and would love to see something taller go up there to compliment the hydro building on the next block.

If so, and about time, I would detest seeing The Boyd knocked down.
It is a beautifully adorned building. The interior as well.
The remaining ones, not.

The Boyd is heritage I believe, it would have to be preserved on the exterior.

Oh, the Boyd building is in good hands... From the Free Press on December 26, 2017:

While it remains undecided what the future holds for the site, following construction, it will no longer serve as office space, owner Armik Babakhanians said.

Boyd Building owner Armik Babakhanians says the familiar Portage Avenue site will no longer house office space once the reno is done. A decision on whether to convert to residential units will be made in five to six months.

He added that residential units are being contemplated, but a decision won’t be made for five to six months.

The building is registered to Jags Development Ltd., which is affiliated with Caspian Construction, owned by Babakhanians.

Imagine the skills required to turn a fully occupied, functioning building into a vacant eyesore!

I think at one time too part of the redevelopment envisioned a Boyd Bldg - Manitoba Hydro skywalk connection.

You were not in the Dermatologist office I was referred to in the Boyd Bldg. His office had a paint scheme from the 60's (gold and greens) and in the examining rooms the floor tiles were lifting.

Even the elevator lobby on his floor could have used a new paint job to make it look a little brighter.

And all this was before the current owner took over the building.

Is there a reason (besides $$$) we haven't seen the kinds of builds, very common in Toronto these days, where a new tower is built in and on-top of the facade of an old building? This would seem like a good option for something like the Bradburn Building (old Don's Photo), which has a forgettable interior but a historic exterior.

The city needs a bylaw saying that if a designated heritage building has been vacant for more than 5 years, the city can expropriate the property. That, or tax the building 50% of the property's value per year if it's been vacant for more than 5 years. It's insane that the Boyd Building and St. Charles Hotel have been sitting vacant for so long. The city needs to get tough on the owners of these vacant historic buildings.
