This is great insight. If PennDot cared about Philly, they'd expand the L all the way down 95 to like Oregon or Snyder in the median as they reconstruct the whole thing. 2nd St. Station could be really cool because the ceilings and head houses are pretty big already. New flooring tile and lighting would go along way. The white/blue subway tile on the walls is already fine.
As a slightly unrelated note, the last 3 times I've taken the L, the real time train arrival has been working. It's kind of a bummer it's only the next train and not the next 2 or 3 trains to arrive like NYC has. This would be especially relevant for BSL stations where you have express and local. Like if you're at Walnut-Locust it would be nice to know if you should take local or wait on express. I'll gladly take it tough.
And yes to the fare gates. Fare gates stop litter, addicts, needles and nuisances before they ever get on the train. The goal should always be stopping the problem before it happens instead of cleaning the trains more frequently. It also generates more revenue so there's no downside.
