This effort definitely goes beyond building a computer, and my hope is there can be enough inertia with the various activities to spur startups, etc. Time will tell on that though.

Either way, it's a great win for the South Side if they end up going with the Chicago Southside location.

Exactly! The best analogy on the impact a quantum hub will have is Fermilab during the Cold War, where thousands of physicists and engineers from across the world regularly passed through to advance nuclear physics and our understanding of the universe by building particle colliders and new theories of physics. A more modern example is NASA's JPL, where a lot of the cutting edge aerospace and planetary science is being done. Chicago and Los Angeles though mainly saw indirect benefits, since both sites are in isolating suburbs. If South Works is selected as a quantum hub, you're going to see thousands of physicists and engineers coming and going to South Chicago and Hyde Park over the next decade, many of whom will want to be living nearby.

The University of Chicago has repeatedly said over the years they want the South Side to become the Silicon Valley of quantum technology, and this is what they meant. This is also why there are projects in the works like Woodlawn Central and Chicago State University's 95th Street redevelopment plan, with even more under the wraps. You're going to see the South Side rapidly densify as many people and companies relocate here, and hopefully many Black Chicagoans who've left are able to move back and benefit from the revitalization.

That's certainly the dream. I would love nothing more than to see that as well...... Time will tell, but seeing Johnson aligned with Pritzker on this makes me feel good.

Even though CME has mentioned looking into moving their data centers to other states, their traders literally won't allow them to cause they still want the fractions of a second advantage by being located in Chicago. Location still matters even in the modern era

I didn't have that on my BINGO card but should have. It's comical but makes sense.

The thing is that if they moved data centers then all these companies would have to invest in data centers near there. Also not easy depending on requirements of those data centers (i.e. a firm may be required to modernize more to operate in some new DC costing them a lot of time and money). And today in Chicago area there companies already have their own advantage based on location. A company today that had an advantage could lose that advantage vs rivals if they were forced to go elsewhere.

Let’s see:
- Boeing is a dumpster fire, and for the foreseeable future, no less
- Citadel is slowly being exposed for their fraudulent trading practices, and Kenny’s Florida mega mansion will be under water and uninsurable within the next decade or so
- Carepillar’s core intl business in the E and SE Asian markets is fairly stagnant

They probably would have been better off staying here (j/k)

All 3 companies still have offices in Chicago/the area. The media has completely bungled what these companies actually did. None of them closed their offices here like they claim

I should have clarified I meant headquarters (Deere being in IL outside of Chicago).
