Things to note:
  • Wellington and Sparks used to overpass Bronson, but you could access Queen from Bronson.
  • Laurier was the road that connected, in a pretty straight line, to the angled extension of Albert. [Was that section called Laurier up to its intersection with Albert?]
  • The LRT follows the old Wellington alignment until it turns under Queen.
  • It was the Federal Government which added the Portage Bridge, thus dumping lots of traffic in front of the Parliament Buildings.
Wellington and the north branch of Sparks went below the cliff. The south branch of Sparks went above the cliff to reach the end of Bronson, the current route. There is no change on how Bronson and Queen are connected except that Queen continued below the cliff and ran across Lebreton Flats. Queen West may have been renamed at some point.

I say the NCC should have been forced to just restore the damn pre-expropriation street grid. It would have been infinitely better than the urban suburb we're getting instead.

Noticed that Albert and Slater are scheduled for watermain and sewer renewal in the next 1-2 years. Will they do full rebuild as in the plans?

Given that they're rebuilding both the east and west limits of Albert and Slater to provide cycling facilities, I would be shocked if they don't do that in the middle section. Then again, it is Ottawa..

What’s the plan for the empty space between Albert/Slater/Bronson? It’s so big you could practically fit a small tower, or a park. But not quite. And why on earth was it necessary to build a slip lane to U turn from Albert to Slater?

Iirc, the triangle is to host an art work, someday.

To accommodate commuters parking on the parking lot by the river using Commissioner Street. Terrible backwards decision, probably lobbied by someone very important.

Is this a recent change? It's seen in (but not a part of) the Lebreton masterplan as a future devolopment parcel.

Perhaps I'm confusing it with the smaller triangle to the west.

These are the current plans. They could use it for some kind of monument in the future I guess.

"Bus platform area". Why couldn't a proper sheltering element for bus passengers have been designed into this project?

It was requested by feds - it's to provide EB access to Slater from Commissioner St.

Now that I think more about it, the cars from Commissioner street could just use Wellington and Lyon which will be even faster during evening rush hour.

The slip lane and the third lane on Albert are completely useless and just take up space from possible development and/or park on that triangle. Right in front of the Mega Library to boot. What a waste.

Long term I'm hopeful that the parking lot down there goes away, so maybe this problem will fix itself.

Why would you use Lyon Street to go south? You would use Bronson.

What if drivers want to go west on Scott? Or north to Gatineau? In those cases then current proposed routing might make sense.

Except you forgot about commercial trucks making that almost 180-degree turn and the NCC factor (Condfederation Boulevard). I'm not saying it's perfect but there's a lot of coordination and dealing with restrictions in the background for a project like this. It's not always obvious or logical unless you're in the know.

They can still go West and North.

I'm talking about u-turn lane from Albert to Slater to go East that cuts through the triangle.

Ah yes, I see. Your concern is just with getting to Bronson to go south.
