Interesting if this line had been kept... or rebuilt in part as condos were going up. We'd have a pretty decent people mover from the SkyTrain to the Beach... something that's kind of lacking, if I'm honest. I'd probably have planned to route it along Pacific Blvd and consider axing the station at today's Creekside park but other than that, I think this really is a missing link downtown and it would be very well used today.
The trains were compartmentalized with only 2 doors per compartment (one each side), so there were safety concerns in using it for transit.

I think it'd end up like the Sydney Monorail. Sure, it made sense in '86, but now it wouldn't connect to anything or go anywhere - at least the False Creek streetcar was right next door to the Canada Line.

But the 2nd door on one side of the car provides alternate egress from an attacker in the car.

The same concern would arise for a gondola.

But remember that retention after Expo 86 was considered for reinstallation in the West End,
and at the time, the West End was really seedy. That's when all the traffic diverters were installed
to prevent johns from cruising for prostitutes.

From the Surrey - Langley SkyTrain thread:

I've been meaning to ask, if TransLink is the only entity that can offer transit services, how is this going to work in West Vancouver:

Quote:
Cypress Village will be served by an Independent Transit Service, operated and funded by British Pacific Properties Limited (BPP), until passenger volumes are high enough for the service to be taken over by TransLink, the
regional transit agency.
(from "Planning the Upper Lands – Cypress Village: Transit Information Sheet")

The Expo Monoraill - I dom't know how serious a proposal it was.
It was sold to Alton Towers amusement park in the UK instead.

I imagine it will work like the proposed bus route to the Fraser Mills development in Coquitlam. It will be funded by the developer, but they will use CMBC or Blue Bus busses.

Independent (private) transit services are allowed, they just can’t operate in a way that would compete with any Translink service. Any proponent wanting to run a service needs to have Translink asses the proposal, TL would then reject or sign off allowing the service.

Last decade TL approved an ITS service between Surrey and UBC. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...able-1.4859144

By the wording it sounds to me like this will be operated with third party busses and drivers.

Thanks, so if I understand you correctly, the Cypress Village service could have stops within the new development, where there's no TransLink service, but they could not service any local stops between CV and the connection with TransLink at Park Royal?

IIRC there's also nothing legally* stopping a gondola from the village down to Dunderave.

*Obviously it's politically impossible.

Feels like it would be better off as private transit

My understanding is that this is correct.

Fare Evasion enforcement.. lol.

How long have we had the Compass Card? How many times have you been checked or seen a check?

I've been riding the 99 B-line a little more lately.. sometimes I will sit close to the doors and watch.. my estimate, around 50% of people don't tap.

Ron.

I would bet that a large majority of the people that don't tap either have a pass or are transferring. They are still supposed to tap but doesn't really warrant a ticket.

Yesterday, around 1pm. I sat with a clear view of the rear door.

Macdonald - 7 boarded, 2 tapped.
Yew - 5 boarded, 2 tapped.
Granville - 8 boarded, 3 tapped.

Funny the number of people that 'pretend' to tap.

It's actually much worse than I thought.

Ron.

Gordon Price said it had nothing to do with prostitution.

https://viewpointvancouver.ca/2020/1...he-way-it-was/

This book suggests otherwise

https://www.google.ca/books/edition/...sec=frontcover

This SFU thesis seems to be split in the middle between urban planning and targeting prostitution

https://summit.sfu.ca/_flysystem/fed...80_AKinzel.pdf

I just saw a $100,000 study on the monorail system downtown through the West End but no articles about why they decided against it.

If you want more fun, watch skytrain turnstiles. The number of young couples that go 2-for-1 .... it's depressing to see so many couples that mutually think theft is acceptable.

I was once leaving Yaletown station through the gate and some girl tried pushing past me the opposite direction
