YYC is likely focused on many things at once. Big issues with places like Houston and Dallas is business demand is still way down post pandemic. This means fewer flights from United, and the corporate demand out of Calgary has been increasingly choosing WestJet.

You also have Atlanta, which does open up lots of Latin America, which does run 2x daily several days a week.

Both Hubs have so many connections to offer each other. It would open up so much of Latin/S. America to WS customers. Interesting why it hasn’t happened
For what it's worth, now that most Mexican nationals once again need a visa to enter Canada, AM has downgraded YYZ to daily, YUL to daily, and YVR to 10x weekly. They were respectively served double daily, double daily and triple daily a few months ago. During peak winter, each destination saw an additional daily rotation as well. So the visa issue has clearly affected demand from Mexico to Canada.

The Mexican government has also cut the number of aircraft movements allowed at MEX from 61 per hour to 43 per hour.

All of these factors mean AM starting YYC is highly unlikely at the moment. Therefore, the only one that can realistically launch the route is WS, and for them, MEX is off limits, and they will have to go to NLU. So not ideal right now, until at least NLU develops into a proper hub.

This being said, both carriers have tried the route before (AM has tried it twice, I believe), and it didn't work. So that says something.

Unfortunately for YYC route development, all of those people appear as O+D between YYC/PVR or YYC/CUN, because the way that the connections have to be built make the real destinations less apparent.
Sure, but that is a niche demographic. You make it seem like they are in the thousands doing that. They aren't. The only thing most people are "connecting" in CUN is their mouth to an alcoholic beverage !

I haven't worked yet with any 11 ops, but I've heard the ground flow doesn't work well. Plus we need 2 extra positions open (West Tower and Monitor) and we just don't have the staff for that. We've been mostly on 35R too, and 11 is only planned to be used when 17L is active.

I took a look and most major destinations in Central/South America are accessible with just one connection (MEX, PTY, BOG, SCL, EZE, GRU and even GIG).

Also AA is adding capacity to DFW with even a third flight for a few weeks in July. AA will even have more seats this summer than DL, putting them in second behind UA in terms of US carriers.

We have more daily United departures (all mainline) than Jazz.

That's insane.

LHR-DEL is AC 850 it seems, so this is a through flight. I guess we sorta got DEL now?

That's about the best way to put it. It's a win for the airport authority. But that's about it.

It wont add aircraft movements or additional passenger numbers out of YYC, but for the airport authority, they can say they have seasonal direct service to DEL now.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter where the plane originates, YVR or YYC. YVR originating pax will be able to connect to this LHR-DEL flight as well. It's a 2h40 stop at LHR eastbound, and a 2h05 stop westbound. Everyone deplanes at LHR, so you're essentially taking two different flights. It just so happens you'll walk back and board the same plane you came on in LHR, and maybe even sit at the same seat you were at earlier. That's about as interesting as it gets.

4Y is planning to launch MUC in S25 up to 5x weekly:

https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/240604-4yns25muc

4Y90 MUC 13:25 - 15:25 YYC x35 332/333
4Y91 YYC 17:10 - 10:40+1 MUC x35 332/333

I’m guessing this is going to replace some of the FRA frequencies.

Great & Calgary YYC international passenger traffic will remain strong.

Official press release. Says it will be year-round as well. Seems like it will replace the early afternoon FRA departures, so 4Y remains the same in terms of overall capacity but split between 2 destinations.

12x weekly FRA was too much. Not surprised it only lasted one season.

As currently scheduled MUC is a 1710 departure from YYC and FRA remains 1700... so we'll have to see if that changes.

YYC May 2024 Stats:

Domestic: 1,109,728 -0.3 (YTD 4,632,062 +1.14%)
Transborder: 301,102 +9.1% (YTD: 1,419,567 +11.95%)
International: 203,968 +20.7% (YTD: 1,015,957 +12.33%)

May 2024 Total: 1,614,798 +3.6%
2024 YTD: 7,067,586 +4.67%

Domestic is still flatlining, but US/International continues to show increases.

I'm hoping June/July/August will pad domestic numbers for the rest of the year...I think they'll probably continue to flatline after that. Besides PD it doesn't seem like domestic capacity has increased that much, has it? WS has relatively smaller domestic increases overall, Lynx is gone and Flair is reduced so I suppose that also plays a role?

Pretty good slashes from AC, definitely adds up.

AC+QK is at half of their daily departures now vs Feb 2020.
