The problem is we are not building as many homes as we are growing by. If you can think of a better way to add more homes in a geographically constrained area other than densifying I'm sure the housing ministers would all love to hear it.
Where do you think this population increase is coming? it is not from people who have lived here their whole lives as these people are leaving in droves. The simple truth is this city is being sold off to foreigners. Trudeau's immigration policy is also to blame, can't wait for him to go.

To these people "foreign buyer" includes "immigrants and children of immigrants".

It is only a shitshow now because of low-density urban sprawl. But if you really can't stand the sight of high rises, then moving would be the best bet.

This country needs new people to immigrate here to help fund low-productive local economies and feed the increasing aging population: many making millions selling off their big city properties and then moving elsewhere. This is not solely a Trudeau idea, but others had been doing the same all along because no one else knows exactly how to make this country more competitive internationally. Any idea you care to give?

You've literally been shown visual represantion of the fact that Vancouver is in no way anything like Hong Kong, nor in danger of becoming anything like it any time soon in our lifetimes.
And yet you just barrelled over that like it wasn't even brought up.

The point has even been made that Burnaby's, or even Greater Vancouver's population could triple or quadruple in the next 50 years, and we'd still not have a housing or planning policy that would have anywhere in the region looking like Hong Kong (there are physical geographical reasons why Hong Kong is so densely packed the way it is that simply do not, and would never apply to the lower mainland and the GVA).

And yet still nothing.

Still all you see is hordes of people moving here and packing the place.
Even though, on the other hand you see the problem being foreign buyers (who I assume you don't think live here) buying up property here and forcing developers to build more. (????)
I don't know. I can't exactly work out the logic in the foreign buyers being the problem with the population increase and density problem in the city.

Given the likelihood that this thread will probably be hit with the "off-topic" banhammer sooner rather than later, I'll just reiterate the point that's been made, that the problem is the housing supply we currently have not meeting the current demand.
The problem would still exist even if Feds cut immigration down to zero like you or other anti-Trudeau folks want.
It's a problem that's irrespective of people moving to Canada as it's been growing for decades on the shoulders of bad housing policies and misguided land use planning policies by all levels of governments on both sides of the aisle.

And that's what the housing legislations are seeking to address.

It is a Foreign Buyers Ban, not a Foreign Money Ban.

Just as people here get money from their parents to buy, so do people whose parents are offshore. Note Trudeau specifically exempted international students from the ban...

You're dreaming if you think people are going to stay isolated to their Condo communities. All though this sounds good on paper the reality is people who live in Vancouver are going to travel congesting are highways, parks etc.

Again far from reality, immigration is putting huge strain on our economy from highways, housing, hospitals, schools etc. I am not against immigration but this is getting out of hand.

If you think immigration has a strain on our economy you should see what a declining population combined with labour shortages do.

There's a reason Canada is opening its doors right now and it's not to increase traffic and piss off racist old boomers...

And the same Trudeau is cutting down on the number of international students that Canadian universities will be able to accept, ........

Just some important context to note.

Exactly. This isn't a Burnaby / Metro Van / BC problem - it's a problem all across Canada. There's a thread about what the BC gov is doing here - which is a much better place to complain instead of cluttering up this thread with off topic arguments.

And to broaden the lens even a little bit farther, it's not just a Canada-specifc problem neither.

Even the US is currently experiencing a historic housing supply shortage issue.

Largely due to the same causes as Canada, but with a few more wrinkles on their end.
And not surprisingly, largely the same solutions are being touted as necessary to help solve it, - which the governments here are also trying to pursue.

Primarily, increase the supply - by legislating and facilitating the construction of more housing to meet the demand.

But you're right, this has gone off-topic long enough.

I'm sorry, I can't see the difference between the two photos. Are you referring to Kowloon Bay in Hong Kong?

Lol at people complaining about high rises going up near skytrain stations. That’s the entire point of it.

Don't worry. You're safe in Mission and Maple Ridge. Nothing there for us to see.

I guess you people do no not know the difference between "becoming" and "is". I am not talking about Burnaby as a whole; I am talking about in the specific areas where they are increasing density and pushing towers closer together. These areas will feel like Hong Kong if it keeps going like this.

And what's wrong with Maple Ridge? I guess there is still nature there and you cannot walk around and take pictures of towers all day, what a bummer!

Before you, I'm sure Neolithic humans also loved living in caves and tree tops, or run wild in the steppes, plains or prairies, and couldn't stand the sight of huts built by the new comers. Alas, people evolve with time.

My personal opinion? It all started going downhill since the invention of agriculture. We used to have enough parkland for everyone, but ever since our politicians started wanting us to become like the Mesopotamians density has been out of control.

(1) Metro Van isn't becoming anything in the next century at this pace.

(2) The areas that feel like HK to you are so tiny that you have to go out of your way to be in them. Why are you going there if they are so unpleasant? Oh wait... maybe because they're not unpleasant and they are in fact destinations?

(3) The surface parking lots in Mission and Maple Ridge are indeed amazing places for hiking. You have Canadian Tire on one side of the surface lot and a hot dog stand on the other. Can make a day out of it.

Fact is, the denser parts of Metro are actually closer to nature than your Alberta-esque wastelands.

Yeah, not at all a bad thing cuz I can't imagine myself running into Stanley Park every time I am hungry to skin a poor resident racoon for food, or to forage for wild berries while the nearby grizzly stares me down with its hungry eyes.

Well said. I've never understood people who choose to live in or go to urban city areas just to complain that they look and feel like urban city areas. Cities are supposed to have towers and high density. There's plenty of other places to be if you don't like the city. Stop trying to stop the city from being the city. That's what metropolitan areas are supposed to be like, and MetroVancouver has been lagging behind in growth of development compared to growth of population for decades now... hence why everything is so expensive. The density is much needed and wholly welcome. We need more of it in order to catch up on 30 years of lagging.

This line of thinking is very interesting. Towers in Brentwood aren't displacing any nature. It was before a light industrial site, full of parking lots and concrete too. Now it's just becoming arranged in a more livable way, ie housing, which prevents greenfield development in the suburbs which actually displaces greenery.

I think people experience dense urban areas differently from low density suburbs. People feel like urban areas are much larger than they actually are, and write off sprawling suburbs as not being as large as they really are.
