Most important thing is getting those final tramway studies off the ground. we're suppose to get an announcement any day now () on the Quebec portion of the route. If she can get funding for the Quebec portion and Ontario portion of the final studies by the end of this term, it will be a major win.

Otherwise, I'd expect the police station plans to be finalized and ready for tender, along with maybe the Plateau sports complex (both projects have advanced significantly thanks to interim Mayor Champagne). The new art gallery near Ruisseau de la Brasserie could also potential start construction.

Any advancement to deal with the Guertin homeless encampment would also be important over the next year and a bit.

I know I shared doubts on this new mayor, but now that she is in, I have to give her the chance to prove herself.

Hopefully everything you mention comes to fruition, she has 17 months to set her vision and hope it is a good one.

Seems the election of Maude Marquis-Bissonnette in Gatineau has already made a positive impact. She's been meeting with politicians and leaders of all levels starting the day after she was elected. A wave of positivity and relief has come to Gatineau City Hall. It's clear Interim Mayor Champagne (an "independent") was rooting for a MMB win. Former Mayor and current Councillor Marc Bureau hasn't officially commented since the election, but he had consulted with MMB during her campaign regarding her environmental policies, and had spoken against Yves Ducharme.

I don't think it really matters. The Feds will build it or they won't regardless of the opinions of City Councils. Tbf, Maude hasn't straight up come against it either. I think she could support it if it comes with the removal of lanes on Downtown bridges and include a proper transit link.

S’il devient maire de Gatineau, en novembre prochain, Mario Aubé promet qu’il se fera le «guerrier du pont dans l’est». La formule n’est pas sans rappeler celle utilisée par la mairesse Maude Marquis-Bissonnette qui s’était affichée comme la «guerrière du tramway» lors de l’élection partielle à la mairie, le printemps dernier.

«J’ai toujours été derrière ce projet de pont dans l’est parce que Gatineau est un grand territoire et qu’il nous faut vraiment améliorer la mobilité de nos citoyens, a affirmé le chef de l’Équipe Mario Aubé. D’avoir une traversée supplémentaire pour aller à Ottawa, une première dans l’est de la ville, c’est une nécessité. Il y a déjà une masse importante de population dans l’est et elle est appelée à augmenter. Comme maire, je me ferai le guerrier du pont dans l’est, même si c’est un projet fédéral. Je m’assurerai d’avoir toutes les discussions nécessaires pour que le projet soit bien compris à Ottawa. Ce n’est pas un projet à sens unique.»

Les propos du conseiller de Masson-Angers et candidat à la mairie de Gatineau aux prochaines élections municipales font suite à l’annonce du gouvernement fédéral, jeudi, du déclenchement des études préliminaires devant mener à la construction du pont de l’île Kettle entre 2032 et 2034. Contrairement à la mairesse Marquis-Bissonnette, M. Aubé avait été invité et était présent à la conférence de presse du député fédéral de Gatineau, Steven MacKinnon, la semaine dernière.

«Ce sera assurément un enjeu électoral, insiste M. Aubé. On voit comment c’est devenu difficile de densifier dans l’ouest de la ville parce qu’on n’a pas fait les investissements nécessaires au bon moment pour s’assurer que les citoyens puissent conserver une bonne mobilité dans ce secteur. Il y aura aussi de la densification dans l’est. On n’a qu’à penser au développement du pôle de la Cité. C’est énorme ce qui s’en vient là. Est-ce qu’on doit attendre de se rendre compte que c’est devenu trop congestionné sur le pont des Draveurs et du Portage pour traverser à Ottawa avant d’agir? Il ne faut pas refaire les erreurs qu’on a faites dans l’ouest. Il faut prévoir les infrastructures nécessaires pour que la population se déplace bien. Il faut être derrière ce projet de pont si on ne veut pas se réveiller dans quelques années et se dire qu’on aurait dû agir avant. Il faut y penser dès maintenant. On ne peut pas indéfiniment exiger des gens de Gatineau, Masson-Angers, Buckingham, Cantley ou Thurso de devoir passer par l’entonnoir du centre-ville pour se rendre à Ottawa.»

Maude Marquis-Bissonnette est pour sa part demeurée prudente dans ses propos lorsqu’invitée à réagir à l’annonce fédérale de jeudi. Par écrit, elle a indiqué qu’elle allait suivre «avec attention» les conclusions des études préliminaires afin de bien comprendre les «effets réels» d’une telle infrastructure sur la circulation dans la région. «En matière de transport, on doit collectivement se doter d’une vision durable à long terme quant à la mobilité entre les deux rives de la rivière des Outaouais», a-t-elle ajouté.

It'll be AG with 11 districts (maybe 12) and the mayor. One independent (AG-aligned). Mario Aubé's party will have 5-6.

The mayoral vote was much closer than I expected! I thought MMB would have this election in the bag but there's clearly a huge East-West divide.

The Independent guy Edmond Leclerc is strongly aligned with Action Gatineau. I think a lot of people only see the tram vs the bridge when both could be built, and neither will be funded by the City. The east of Gatineau quickly forgets it got the Rapibus (under Marc Bureau tbf) and the Slush Puppie (under Maxime PJ). Action Gatineau is very much talking about the new multi ice centre in the Buckingham-Masson area.

UPDATE 2: Looks like there were three "split tickets": Wards (districts) that voted differently for Mayor and for local councillor:

Limbour: Maude for Mayor, Aubé party councilor
Touraine: The opposite of Limbour.
Buckingham: Independent councilor, Aubé for mayor.

In all other wards, the Councilor elected was of the same party as the Mayoral vote.

That seems strange to me. For Buckingham, I'm not surprised that they didn't vote for Rémi Bergeron, but as I mentionned previously, the independent Councillor who won re-election is more aligned with Action Gatineau.

This is what I kinda find confusing about the narrative of "The Neglected East". In the 2000s and 2010s, the only things that ever got built were east of the river. Living in the West, it always seemed the unspoken arrangement that if we were patient, we'd get ours too. No one bellyached about how the Rapibus, Sports Complex, arena or bus garage "alienated" Hull and Aylmer. But now that the equivalent infrastructure is being built somewhere that isn't Gatineau, the East is "left out".

I'm not saying that there are zero valid issues anywhere in the East. But this particular narrative seems bizarrely ahistorical to me.

Yeah. We're just catching up with major projects needed in the west.

We didn't even mention the the riverfront in Pointe Gatineau a few years ago, or the upcoming investment going into Guy Sanche/Salle Odyssée. We had a great (tbf private) indoor farming project near the CIP that was voted down by the locals. Part of rue Notre-Dame was recently redone, rue Georges. I'm sure we're missing a whole bunch.

She won by 3300 votes, and it was heavily weighted in the central and west end.
