^ I was curious about black squirrels as I saw some at my sister's place in Calgary (and have seen them in Ottawa and Southern Ontario). It turns out black and grey squirrels (very common in Winnipeg) are exactly the same. The black squirrels in Calgary were introduced in the 1930s and quickly spread in the area.

In Moncton, the greys showed up about 12-15 years ago, and have been involved in pitched warfare with the native reds ever since. In my backyard, the reds are putting up a vigorous defence, and, occasionally seem to drive the greys out, but, the greys currently seem to be in ascendancy.

It is a veritable Game of Thrones!

I can't remember the last time I saw a squirrel? We have them here, I remember feeding them at our cabin when I was growing up. But I haven't seen one that I noticed in ages.

Same with mosquitoes. I've probably seen half a dozen since I moved back home in 2012, even though we have them. We even have a town named after them

American destroyer in port to refuel (zoom makes hill look more significant. Background is just Signal Hill).

And view from my room hehe.

It's strange how fast their regular visits died - and that's one I can remember! I've heard the stories from my parents generation about how there were thousands of Portuguese sailors in the city at any given time, playing soccer down on the harbour apron, parading gift statues to Catholic churches, hooking up at underground gay clubs All before my time. But even I remember all the American and Russian sailors. But lately, since I moved home in 2012, the only ones that jump out to me in my memory are Canadian and Venezuelan, and the latter was just a one-time visit.

Sunny, breezy day again. Perfect day for this savanna trail, as full beating sun suits the landscape, but the breeze keeps you cool.

25C and sunny. This is our 10th day over 25C in May. Only Windsor at 11 has more this month.

Low of 11C this morning.

The warmspot was Moosonee, ON at 29.3C

Warmest low was Pickle Lake, ON at 15.1C

Watching Roland Garros, it really is nuts how awful spring is in Paris (and Northern Europe in general). Between 13-15C and rainy every day this week. Here in Montreal, even during our crappiest spring we will not get more than 2-3 consecutive such days.

And again. Woken up by the strangest-sounding bird, middle of the night.

Ottawa stats for May 2024: Ave High: 21.2C / Ave Low: 9.9C
Highest High: 30.6C / Lowest Low: 4.6C - Just slightly above the average. Nothing remarkable but no frost at all so a good May in general

Cloud, fog, light rain, and 9 at 12:30pm. Coastal northeasterly flow will stick around for the next 7 days, so this is pretty much the forecast every day between now and then.

Trash.

27C (humidex of 28) and sunny today. A+ day.

Low of 13C this morning. Relatively dry so freshness in the mornings.

The warmspot was Chamouchouane, QC at 29.4C

The warmest low was Ashcroft, BC at 15.4C.

MTL avg temperature in May was 16.8C or 16.9C (since we are missing data on a warm day). Beats 2015 by 0.3 degree. Not sure if warmest May.

I was expecting a rainy day but it didn't really pan out that way.
It was mostly overcast, calm, dry and mild.

Saturday's high at Vancouver Harbour was 16 C, the low was 12 C.

It's alright for a treat, but we've got a whole week of this head.

Spanish navy and German fishery patrol in port today. Just one ship each. And Russia seems to be ramping up its fishing just outside (and, likely, inside - Canada rarely patrols this) the 200-mile limit. Probably why there's that little jump in American/EU activity.
