Maybe this is my suburban family upbringing coming out, but again I feel like the Gilmore location exudes that way more than the Brentwood location. I know the "food hall" is trying to fight the stigma, but who's going out with the family to a mall food court?

Yes, the older locations do for sure. The newer ones not so much. I've only been to the "new" one at Homer and Georgia and they tried to make it upscale. The old downtown Georgia one (now gone), West Broadway, and the Kingsway one are much more like the old style.

It feels like they are trying to go for the Earls/Cactus market. Those people aren't choosing White Spot.

I'm pretty sure Whitespot's (not Triple O's) entire business model (whether they like it or not) is based around baby boomer nostalgia, and why would anyone wanting a sit down diner experience go to R+D when they could go to the ancient Gilmore location of their youth down the block?
No one thought R&D from White Spot was a good idea except for the idiot at White Spot that came up with the idea. They should just make all their restaurants into self order/pickup systems and dump staff to control costs.

Originally it was supposed to be a totally new concept called Nat's Kitchen & Tap House... that might have done better.

Ron.

Apparently they are being approached by developers.

I wonder if the majority of these complainers reside inside of outside of the 800m radius.

What's with the super bright light on top of Tower 1 tonight? LED lighting malfunctioning or something being filmed up there? It's very noticeable from Metrotown.

Has it been on previously? If not it’s likely a burn in procedure.

That would be the natural progression of things to come.

When you read that article, you would think that the SFH occupants are plants: need excessive sunlight to live. Well, let's see how they wither once the towers are built. But I suppose after getting millions from future developers, they would be able to afford the penthouses to get their foo....I mean, sunlight.

Good point. The place that did this better (for a brief period of time) was the Earls Test Kitchen on Hornby pre-covid. They rolled out the brunch before any core locations had them and yes it was just brunch but there were some inventive dishes on there and it was astonishingly cheap. Brunch "happy hour" was before 11am and you could order things like $5 mimosas and $12 benedicts with some surprisingly fun twists on brunch classics.

The light was actually not from the tower but possible filming in Lynn Valley. The line of sight for the incredibly bright light just happened to cross the tower 1 penthouse level when viewed from Metrotown.

GOOD!

https://storeys.com/burnaby-brentwood-transit-oriented-development-exemption/

Quote:
"The Province Responds
Reached for comment this week by STOREYS, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure provided a clear-cut response when asked about Burnaby seeking an exemption.

"The Province is not considering exemptions to the TOA designations across BC that were established last year," the Ministry said. "The purpose of the legislation and the TOA designations is to ensure that appropriate densities are being achieved on all eligible properties that are zoned for residential purposes adjacent to high quality transit nodes like Brentwood Station."

The Ministry did not explain why it would not be considering exemptions, but even the consideration of Burnaby's petition for an exemption would likely open the door for numerous other cities to follow suit and seek out exemptions of their own."
To that last point of even entertaining this petition let alone allowing any such exemption, I mean,....DUH!

Next thing you know there'd be neighbourhood groups from all over demanding their own exemption.

Also, it's delightful that Hurley and his City Council hitched themselves to this petition and threw their support behind it and likewise, got to share in the rejection.
They know better than anyone else that nowhere in Burnaby will ever look like that ridiculous photoshop image thanks to the tower seperation bylaws and requirements that they have in place and do enforce, but yet they let that kind of stupid fear-mongering get perpetuated and carried out.
Serves them right!

It's so weird what qualifies as "off-topic" or "on-topic" on this forum nowadays.
