You cannot convince Vim or whatnext that drug users are people who are suffering and not just "zombies" or "junkies" who should be left to die in alleyways or "drug dens".

Judging by this article, St. Paul's already has drug smokers inside. This is unbelievable, what a failure of BC NDP policy.

When health-care staff at St. Paul’s Hospital saw the recent uproar over a leaked memo outlining drug use and weapons inside northern B.C. hospitals, many couldn’t help but laugh. It represents only a fraction of the truly mind-boggling things they see daily inside their downtown Vancouver hospital.

Rampant drug use inside hospital rooms, open drug dealing on the wards and so many overdoses in a rooftop courtyard area that there’s now a tent to protect staff from the rain for when they have to resuscitate people numerous times a day.

“Absolutely there are people throughout that hospital who are dealing and using everywhere,” one nurse who works there told me....

....The B.C. government has insisted drug use and weapons aren’t allowed inside hospitals, contrary to the Northern Health memo to staff. However, the BC Nurses’ Union says it’s a daily reality for members, which has worsened since decriminalization began last January.

Increasingly, nurses are getting sick from having to walk through toxic plumes of fentanyl from all the drug smoking in rooms, bathrooms and hallways, said the union. Members have said when they complain, they are accused of not being supportive enough of harm reduction.....

"We must be sympathetic to users" (eg. don't do anything), and that's the current trendy belief in today's society.

The healthcare industry is equally guilty of this outcome because increased government funding into the industry due to drug use rendered no opposition to the liberal use of drugs from the get-go. People reap what they sow.

The ventilation system in hospitals would make it unlikely that fumes from drug use could become concentrated enough that it is affecting nurses, though if drug use is actually happening inside hospitals, that is ridiculous.

Nobody seems to care about what happens in parks, indoor public areas, laneways, and even entire neighbourhoods like Chinatown, DTES and downtown's Granville Street. So why should people be sympathetic to nurses, doctors and healthcare workers?

Sigh. People are told or even made to leave if they are caught being too loud or smoking in restaurants. However, taking drugs is OK! What a warped world we live in.

A woman has been arrested for what Vancouver police say is a series of assaults against random strangers in the city.

Police say officers responded to several calls on Sunday in the city’s downtown core where the 32-year-old woman is alleged to have assaulted three people.

Vancouver Sgt. Steve Addison says in a statement that a 37-year-old woman with her nine-year-old daughter was pushed to the ground and robbed of her phone.

Moments later, a 33-year-old woman had rocks thrown at her.

Then, Addison says, a 57-year-old man was assaulted with a piece of wood.

He says the man was able to pin the woman down while witnesses called 911.

Police say they arrested the suspect, who remains in custody.

Doctor shot in face during downtown Vancouver — violence: sources

CityNews has learned a local doctor was the victim in a brazen downtown Vancouver shooting last week.

Sources confirm that the doctor was not the intended target, but was left with significant injuries after being shot in the face around 7:50 p.m. near Homer Street and West Pender Street on April 3.

CityNews learned Friday that there was an exchange of “words” between the gunman and the doctor before shots rang out.

The Vancouver Police Department said at the time the shooting was not related to the ongoing B.C. gang conflict, but did say that investigators believed it to be targeted.

Sources say the 46-year-old victim will likely need some form of reconstructive surgery during his recovery....

I'm confused, I assume the doctor got into an argument with some crackhead and got shot, but they're saying he was the unintended target?

So the gunman got into an argument with the doctor, then shot at someone else, and it hit the doctor?

Yeah, that's weird.
You'd think the motivation for the shooting would have been the argument,
unless the gunman had another altercation at the same place and the doctor was protecting the other guy.

At the end of the day this situation is another great reminder to mind your own business, you never know how far people are willing to go.

Also, if you see two people about to fight, never stick around.

Or he could just be a very good doctor trying to protect someone who was hurt? Unfortunately, many good people get hurt because we don't punish the bad ones enough here.

I disagree, that's close to to blaming the victim. After all, if he's a doctor and saw the perp beating on someone it's understandable he'd feel the need to act. But the VPD seems to have been very vague and/or selective about the info they released in this case. Was it your typical street crazy with a — (alarming) or a suburban wannabe gangster?

Just because he's a doctor doesn't mean he was helping out someone. It could just as easily be some drug buy with a dealer gone bad if you want to wildly speculate about it

From this more recent article it sounds as though he was just walking by but who knows.

...Sources have told Global News the shooting may have resulted from a dispute involving two drug dealers, during which shots were fired and the doctor was accidentally struck.

“We know that it’s not gang-related. We know this incident isn’t tied to any of the other serious incidents we’ve been investigating in the last several weeks,” Vancouver police spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin said.

Doctors of BC is calling the shooting “an absolutely tragic incident.”

The anesthesiologist is now out of hospital but remains off the job indefinitely...

Justin Delaney Littlewolfe, 32, has been charged with one count of discharging a firearm and one count of aggravated assault for his alleged role in the shooting, which occurred following an altercation near Homer Street and West Pender Street.

Police do not believe the victim was the intended target of the shooting.

Littlewolfe remains in custody.

Quick work by three women in downtown Vancouver resulted in an arrest after an assault on Tuesday.

The Vancouver Police Department says the three women came to the aid of a person who had been attacked by a stranger near West Georgia and Burrard Street.

One called 911, another helped with first aid, and the third comforted the victim, police say.

Using information provided by witnesses, patrol officers say they were able to quickly track down and arrest the 37-year-old suspect nearby.
