Here's another throwback YOW pic. This one I would say is circa 1964-65 with the Vangaurd on the ramp. Photo credit: Blaine Peters

They'd actually love to fly to Ottawa and Edmonton and as many decent size cities as they can filling their onward flights which is one of the biggest networks in the world. We have an agreement that limits the number of cities they can go to. It's reciprocal so of course we have no interest in going to the 5th 6th etc cities in Turkey.

Why not? I think it would be a great route for one of their 787-9's, and a perfect 4th Canadian destination for Turkish. Air France is capitalizing on Ottawa's demand for Western Europe, Turkish could capitalize on Ottawa's potential demand for Eastern Europe and the Middle East. They could also become the hub for Ottawa-India travel, and that's a market which is growing exponentially, but through Toronto.

I mean I’d love to be wrong. Anyone know what the O&D is between YOW-IST? I personally do not know how to look up such figures.

There's an air travel agreement between Canada and Turkey that only allows for them to serve three specific airports in Canada (Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver). It was only recently expanded a few years ago to include Vancouver, so in order for YOW to become a destination airport the agreement would need to be revisited.

As you all know, I am not an expert in any of this stuff, but I imagine any new airline deciding to go overseas out of Ottawa would be well-served to have a code share with Porter. Wouldn't that make sense? It would be another way for people to get from origin X (Istanbul, Doha, Mumbai, Amsterdam) to some pretty important destinations (Boston, NYC, Orlando, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary) and eventually some new spots like Vegas or San Fran.

Wouldn't there be some demand for a new (quiet) connection to places like that?

A pregnant cat being transferred from YWG to YOW went missing in YOW's parkade on Thursday afternoon after her carrier door accidentally popped open.

Contact Furry Tales Cat Rescue if you happen to spot her.

QUOTE=SimpleEng;10171144]EDIT - I moved my post to the Canadian Airport Thread II thread (https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?p=10171165) as it's not technically related to YOW.[/QUOTE]

The reason Porter uses some of the airports it does in the states.

The main reason they don’t use LGA or DCA….. YTZ doesn’t have US pre clearance. This is good news for YOW because all the q400’s from the smaller airports ( mainly out east) can connect via YOW to the 295’s going to the states. Also saves PD from have to route the q400’s via YYZ as well.

Flair's booking engine is apparently back to normal this morning. I did notice that there is a MAX ferrying to Aguascaliente in Mexico this morning from YOW. Maybe heading to storage while they operate a reduced schedule?

Porter partnering with AA and joining Oneworld would nicely pave the way for BA. Porter's already partnered with Alaska, also Oneworld. I think daydreaming of any Int'l destination other than London should be suspended until it's back. London is the biggest gaping hole in our route map at the moment relative to demand (even though it's really easy to get to from Paris).

There will be no XLRs at AC until late '25 earliest. Screw waiting for another year of missing LON (2025) if we can help it. If there's a play to be made, YOW AA needs to do it in the next 6-8 months for spring/summer '25 start. That's my dream. TS to LON would be a consolation prize.

LGA and DCA are AA hubs as well. Once YTZ gets preclearance in 2025, if that partnership materializes then I wonder if they are able to move their ops from EWR and IAD.

While TS to LGW would be a consolation prize, in theory it could open the door to other European routes on the 321neo. Of course they do risk eating into their YUL flights as lord knows how many people to the drive to YUL for a direct flight with TS. Given they've cut their transcons and SFO/LAX flights on the 321, I wonder if there is a world where they'd ever try keeping a couple sun flights year round from YOW, with feed from the east on PD codeshares.

I swear to God AC baffles me to no end. I know they are preferring to increase operations at their hubs, and Ottawa is unimportant to them but there are full wide bodies crossing the Atlantic from YOW right now and those that are driving to YUL from here aren't necessarily choosing AC. There's Emirates, Qatar, Swiss, TAP, KLM, AF, BA, Turkish, TS, etc. I don't have any data to who is choosing what but I would assume most aren't using AC with all those options. You'd think they would move faster but it seems YOW is even more unimportant than I thought. I seriously hope BA gets here first and dominates YOW-LHR. At least in this case YOW would have access to all of BA's network and not some perfunctory handful of connecting options with AC's partners.

On a side note, PD have begun conducting tests of their hangar fire system and they posted a video of it on their Instagram page. That hangar looks incredibly impressive.

Unfortunately, most of the cities served from the list of airlines you named have service on AC (or a Star Alliance partner) from YYZ. So yes, AC is building their hub at YYZ, and YOW is a spoke to that system. Them reinstating YOW-LHR would mostly be O&D or limited connections via YOW.

Likewise, CDG is AF's hub, and YOW is a spoke on that system. It's just with AF, we can fly to Europe first before transiting to our next city.

LH "starting" FRA would be great, as it would be a second Europe route, but YOW would still be spoke in that system.

The benefit of CDG, is that it is a destination in itself and likely helps with the apparent success of the route so far.

Yes you're correct, namely Swiss, Turkish, and TAP but do they have a joint venture with AC? The more I personally am able to avoid AC, YYZ, and YUL the better.

Interesting PD article in Wings: https://www.wingsmagazine.com/party-at-mr-porters-house/?oly_enc_id=5001D3490978J5J

Highlights:
-YHU will see both jets and turboprops (no surprise there - at the very least to YTZ);
-No DH4s at YYZ for the foreseeable future and definitely none in 2024, but they plan to have them there eventually;
-60,000 pax transferred since the PD-TS interline agreement. Now with the full JV and codesharing, they're targeting 15-18% of TS pax transferring to/fom PD;
-They claim their Dash 8 wages are now the highest in Canada to help with pilot retention and internal promotions; and
-Are definitely eyeing acquiring more Dash 8s:

Quote:
The jet fleet will eclipse the Dash-8s in 2024, and Porter has not ruled out adding turboprops. “As we build up the hubs in eastern Canada, the Dash-8 fleet gives us opportunities to create more feed and build connectivity across eastern Canada,”

Today’s departure count: 72, including 8 sun flights

Today’s cancellation count (so far): 0

For point 4:
I have heard through the grapevine that starting on the dash fleet will get you into the jets quicker than starting at Jazz (even on the CRJ or E-jets) before they make the leap to AC mainline.

I have spoken to at least one senior flight attendant who likes working the quick turns on the dash because they can usually sleep in their own bed (think: YOW-EWR-YOW-YTZ-YOW type routing) as oppose to transitioning to the E-Jet and doing a YYZ-YOW-YEG and having to overnight in Edmonton. Even if it means more "work" for them in-flight.

Sorry to belabor this point, but I really don't think the airlines understand the Ottawa market. They bring in direct to CDG and everyone is going to Paris this year (myself included). Many people do not like flying as much as we used to and will plan our travel around direct flights. BA brings London back and we are all going there next year, mark my words!

What you’re referring to is stimulating demand with direct options. It’s definitely a thing and I’ve chosen multiple vacations destinations in the past just because they were direct from YOW.
