the taller one near the hospital has a lighting strip running up the side, it's kinda odd looking as you drive west on Highway 1 from the Port Mann since its the only light in the building and the building disappears.

Excavation has started at the Douglas College expansion and student housing site. They’re a year behind their original schedule and it’s now due to be ready for fall 2027.

I saw this for the first time from Highway 17 recently and it is pretty odd looking.

Wow, that's nice. Interesting seeing the juxtaposition of this vs Burnaby's rec centre/ice rinks that's also on the cusp of opening.

The building itself looks nice, but I can't believe we are still wasting land by putting new buildings in a sea of parking in the year 2024. Then they will say it is 'Green' because it has some LEED certification...

Ice rinks would probably need to be closed in for temperature regulation more than a swimming pool complex.

100% agree! I remember bringing this up during consultations when the project is kicking off. If this was a private project I'm sure that the city would be pressing for underground parking that is more in keeping with an urban environment. I'm told that cost was of course the consideration. I believe there were some preliminary discussions with the Justice Institute about a shared parking structure. I still think the decision was short sighted. The city is kicking off a new parks and recreation plan now. A shortage of sports fields is sure to be one of the conclusions. There aren't many large, flat pieces of land in New West to expand to. It is a shame that the city just paved over one of the largest flat properties that they own!

it costs more for sure, but then you have all that extra land, which would cost a fortune to acquire, especially in that location. PoCo put the parking underground for their new rec. centre (and it really makes a huge difference to how it seamlessly blends into the neighbourhood) and it didn't cost much more ($132mn vs $107mn for New West).

Could just put a parking structure underneath a field (or build playing fields on a parking structure roof). I've seen that done before, it works quite well. However it was done in the opposite order, where a sports field existed but the demand for more parking drove the redevelopment of the fields to have underground lots.

IMO, New West needs a second recreation centre somewhere downtown. The 12th Street area is going to see some large developments that could make this happen (and will certainly drive the need for a second rec centre).

Combined with the improvements from 810 Agnes, should really improve the area from sketchy back alleys into something decent (hopefully the sketchy types don't ruin it too much).

The church that's in there is closing as of April 1 (they're moving up to 6th Ave & 12th St, I believe), and the little restaurant thing next to the sushi place up on 8th St is closed as well. Sure hope this moves quickly!

Rong Rong Tea House was damn good. Hopefully they can find another space nearby. They'd be a great addition to the River Market imo.
