I was thinking about the Mustard festival the other day and then realized I hadn't heard anything about it in years. If it died thats a damn shame cause theres a lot more people living in the area where they held it now. Probably would have been a bit more popular.

The pandemic really killed off some of these.

I feel like the pandemic made people realize they didn't need anywhere near the amt of things they thought they did - and so post-pandemic some things just.. never came back.

If you can live out of your home for 2 years what else do you really need? You can order in food, groceries, netflix, theatre movies, 🞵🞵🞵, etc.

We all live like kings now and our servant class are the people who drive taxis and ubers to deliver it to us lol..

During the pandemic, Soupfest was just... go to a restaurant and order their special soup, then vote online. I liked that a lot more than going to the Convention Centre and standing around eating tiny samples.

A few years back, someone did a beer fest on the Jackson Square rooftop. That one was a lot of fun, and it was great to see that space get used.

Looks like they didn't get very far with the demolition and people have been getting in there lately. I have a strong feeling this place is gonna sit like this for several more years to come.

Great so basically due to rising high interest rates - they need to sell 400 units just to get it off the ground, and thus nothing will ever get built here - and this mall will just rot and eventually collapse - it's become what the lister block used to represent - hamiltons rot.

Maybe it's for the best - the condo idea, while nice, didn't feel like it really utilized this plot as majestically as something literally in the very center of the city should. I'd also like to see something built here much much MUCH taller (which I know is unusual for me) but I do believe that cities should have a "peak" of focus that everything else slowly peters away in height from - like the cn tower in toronto - gives it identity.

I agree. Based on the location and size of the property, it is screaming for something iconic. Arguably one of the best parcels of land to build our iconic tower on.

The current proposal is a little meh, especially given the location. Further on the outskirts of downtown it would be more than welcome but I feel like City Centre deserves better.

Totally agree- it would have been nice to have been able to salvage the atrium, as it's arguably the nicest part of the mall and lets so much beautiful light in. Now that rot's set in though the whole thing will have to go sadly.

But yeah, we need something amazing here, esp. since its the site of so much history, old city hall, old Eatons, old farmers market etc.

He was interested just a few years ago.

Imagine what a casino entrance would look like at the mouth of king william, with hotels on top, and a waterpark too

Pfft, that was king street right up into gore park for the longest time - remember why they banned neon signage? They didn't want downtown to feel "seedy" lol.

Could have kept the entire existing structure for a casino though - that giant atrium area coulda just been filled with slot machines.. cuz that's all casinos are now.. is slot machines.. *eyes slowly slide over to casino niagara*

A casino is not something I'd ever want to see downtown.

I think when they're in isolated locations, like a casino in the centre of Hamilton would be, they're just a net drain and do very little for economic development except serve the income of the owners.

Exceptions in the world like Las Vegas, and other places like that, are an entirely different phenomenon.

Ya, outside places known for Casinos they're just sad places where seniors give wealthy owners of the casinos their retirement savings.

Whether they're local or not - seniors are still gonna give their retirement savings to casinos, because the sad reality is many seniors have little else to do. it's why they have shuttle buses to niagara. At least that money would stay in the city. Just tax it so it at least has some good use.

I mean what's the difference - the money on king william goes to the "wealthy" owners of the restaurants. Alt least you know the people who peruse king william have enough money to shop there, they'd have enough to go to a casino too - you make it sound like there are no rich people in hamilton lol.

Also this isn't the old days of high rollers and card tables - you spend pennies on slot machines at casinos now. That's pretty much all they are now is rows upon rows of slot machines. It ain't gonna break the bank. It's at least give all these rich people you want to live in the core something to do. Just instill a credit check so that you're not making poor people poorer - just rich people poorer hehe..
