“The lack of lubrication and misaligned contact of the step-drive main-shaft created wear to the point of failure and allowed the shaft to rotate independently of the drive motor and braking system when loaded [with passengers],” said the incident summary.

New Burnaby Heights bus rapid transit route divides community

A proposed bus route through a northern Burnaby neighbourhood has residents and businesses at odds.

A riders group has launched a petition claiming the opinions of local businesses don’t align with what residents want.

The new bus route would travel from North Vancouver through Burnaby Heights and end in Metrotown.

The Heights Merchants Association, which represents hundreds of businesses in the neighbourhood, argues the route shouldn’t go through the area because it would negatively impact businesses and the neighbourhood itself.

“We had almost no one turn down signing our petition. So, we think that there’s a big disconnect between what the merchants are saying and what the residents of Burnaby Heights really want,” Agar said.

Agar says the proposed RapidBus (BRT) would replace the current 222 route, and slow transit even further if it’s re-routed away from Burnaby Heights.

....The HMA says it doesn’t want the route to go through their neighbourhood as it could impact accessibility for shoppers.

“The BRT is designed to move large numbers of people long distances as quickly as possible,” said Isabel Kolic, executive director of the HMA. “The mandate of the Merchants Association is to make it as easy as possible for local people to shop locally. And so accessibility for a wide diversity of clients is really paramount for us.”

“It’s the old guy with the walker, the shopper with MS [multiple sclerosis]. It’s the mom who has a four-year-old and a one-year-old trying to get seven grocery bags home on a bus. It’s those people that we are really trying to be a convenient district [for.]”

Kolic believes the region is catering transit towards “big shopping malls” and not to local districts that serve local people.

The HMA adds that Hastings Street already has six existing routes that serve the community, which they have been lobbying TransLink to add frequency to the services..

The Height Merchant association showed up at the Mayors Council to whine about losing parking spots.

A bunch of business owners went to the Mayor's council meeting on regional transportation this week to argue against the Hastings Route (and argue for the incredibly stupid Boundary route, in some cases all the way to Canada Way) and it was infuriating to listen to.

Shout out to the lady at the end who said essentially "why is 1 block too far for a driver to walk when you ask transit riders to walk 5?"

Bonus is that the chair of the meeting pointed out, after 2 had gone, that that council wasn't responsible for deciding the route and that they had far, far bigger things to deal with than what the business owners were complaining about.

I'm getting really tired of the standard high street business association attempts to save their parking. Using every bad faith argument other than parking in an attempt to sway the public.

The bus lane will not ruin the local festival, it will not make traffic any worse than not doing so would, it will not cause more pedestrian deaths, it will not ruin the character of the community, it will not split the community any more than the current 6 lanes do, and it will not be any faster to use boundary other than from less people using the BRT.

I think all these extremely predictable complaints whenever bus or bike lanes that would eliminate parking spots are proposed prove, is that many business owners don't use transit or bike, likely drive and use curbside parking when they visit their establishments, and can't imagine their customers aren't exactly like them.

There are certainly businesses that require parking (lumber yards, paint store, furniture stores that don't offer delivery, etc.). But the idea that a restaurant or grocer or clothing store will become inaccessible if there is not curbside parking is laughable.

It's just a strange, irrational bias against buses - if we were talking about a tram or SkyTrain getting built, the owners'd be pushing and shoving each other to have a station right outside their storefront.

2-years ago, Translink announce they would be upgrading Compass to current hardware and software. 2-years on and I here and can't find any info. I really want to use Pay Transit Pass, but can't until the new system is installed, tested and launched.

They are hiring people for it.

They were just approving the business plan in 2022. They still have a new budget item in 2024 for it as well

And there are no other tall buildings between there and Nanaimo. So.... I dunno. Seems like it ought to be pretty decent, although I can imagine the concrete trench under Earles having an impact.

I reckon it should be too hard to get a cell site nearby

Cellmapper shows a bunch of orange which means the reception isn't great there for Freedom. It's only a micro tower site so you probably aren't evening connecting to those nearby towers.
