Why does Mitsui seem to be up in the air? I've seen nothing that seems to raise doubt.

Which Mitsui project are they talking about? I get confused when people just refer to a developer rather than a proposal.

The tower across the street from Whole Foods at 8th and Grand. It will probably be the most stunning tower in DTLA, based off of what Mitsui did with Figueroa 8.

Crescent Heights has four projects proposed for the greater LA area, including one that was just announced in Jan. I'd be curious if they are going to consolidate those projects, or focus on LA instead of those other sub markets. It's about time they broke ground on the Palladium Towers!

Today's Los Angeles Times has a wide-ranging article that, among other things, commemorates Frank Gehry's 95th birthday and recounts the decades-long history of planning, financing, and building Walt Disney Hall. A good read.

A good read about the importance of Disney Hall being the sustaining pride and joy of the city. But completely disagree with the author’s argument that Gehry should be allowed to tinker with the place and “update” it with an orchestra pit, a bar, etc... It’s done. It’s fine. If we allowed Gehry to keep tinkering with the place unrestrained, we would have a giant bow-tie collar sculpture by Claes Oldenburg obstructing the front of the building today.

Regarding Mitsui Fudosan's 8th and Hope proposal, I found out the following (more at the link):

After defeating three appeals last July, two new appeals (one by neighboring property owners and one by a labor union) were filed in October. One of them challenges the project's CEQA compliance. The other claims a violation of downtown design guidelines because the project will come within 40 feet of a proposed structure next door. All appeals must be resolved before the Planning Commission can approve the project.

So . . . claims of the project's demise are greatly exaggerated, and the cause of the delay is not the fault of the developer (or the city). It's nuisance appeals from private parties.

I have a feeling that this will be scaled down and/or value-engineered just like every other awesome proposal in this city. We can never get anything nice or world-class. Hope I'm wrong.

Hmmmm…it’s the same company as Figueroa 8….and that came out better than any of the renderings.
