Considering Gail just put $125M into the building, it seems like a waste. But I'm also not sure where else downtown he could put an entire stadium.
Someone on Reddit said the mayor alluded to the block east of the Delta Center being used for the entertainment district... means they'd be demolishing the west part of the convention center, the Raddison, and Fidelity. Not sure how likely that is.

If it closes, I wonder what the mall will do with that huge space.
They plan on opening 15 new Bloomingdales in conjunction with the 150 Macys closings. Maybe City Creek will be one of the lucky ones to get a Bloomingdales. It would support City Creek's rumored plan to go more upscale.

I was the someone on reddit. The mayor stated the Japanese community and Japantown would have a seat at the table. Then they released a map of the area and clearly showed the west side of the convention center in the redevelopment area.

Hmmm... maybe West Quarter phase III will incorporate the lost convention space. I think this is all a good thing. Connecting the Gateway, Delta Center, West Quarter blocks and revamping that block portion of the Salt Palace will be awesome.

I wish the giant parking lot next to courthouse station was sold and the new arena was built there. Would be nice to eat up existing parking lots. And it would be where the red, green and blue lines all meet, so less trax transfers would have to be made for those taking trax downtown to watch a game

Making the convention center smaller is an awful idea if we want to keep conventions here. FanX uses all of that space and ODR already is setting up tents on the parking lot block. The convention center needs to be bigger not smaller. The best location would be either the triad center block or the parking lot block… unfortunately the Mormon Church hoards land and will probably never sale. Ripping down gateway is another option… unfortunately it’s probably not doable because of the residential.

Is this map available online.

If the Convention Center were to cover the lost space via an expansion over 2nd West and 1st South, it could work. They could put the loading system underground. 2nd West could go under the convention center from 2nd South to South Temple. There could be an underground intersection allowing the connection along 1st South to 3rd West.

This would potentially increase the space enough to replace any lost space removed for the entertainment district, if not actually work as an expansion, albeit slightly.

With this thought, it may be possible that the hotel component for Block 67 Phase 2 could be directly incorporated into the Convention Center and work as a 2nd Convention Hotel. With the possible demolition of the Radison, maybe the commercial tower from Block 67 could be repurposed into another CCH with expanding the Convention Center into Phase 2 a bit.

I will say that as of now, I haven't heard of any possible demolition of existing convention center space. I will reach out to my contacts to see if they have heard anything.

They could make the Salt Palace convention space multi-level like Seattle's.

I wouldn't take that image as a "rendering", can we identify any of the other buildings in the picture as actual existing buildings? Or is this just a concept of a hypothetical development project somewhere downtown?

If they demolish the Radisson and the Fidelity Investments building on the corner, it seems like they could just rebuild that side of the CC into that footprint (to look like the rendering) without losing any floor space, maybe gaining some vertically. Hopefully the South Temple frontage wouldn't be just a solid wall like it is on 100S.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with. The best spots for a completely new arena would undoubtedly be the Newhouse block or the Depot District (especially with the RGP).

This is the right solution. You can take that entire Radisson Block and make it an entertainment complex, while maybe taking some of the office space just to the south of Recursion building at the Gateway and demolish that (leaving the children's museum) or repurpose it as retail and dining/entertainment, opening up 400W street engagement. You close in around the DC with dining/entertainment buildings on the DC block itself. Then you build a second level on top of the main part of the CC. Renovate the Radisson into something more like the CCH. Now you have an entertainment and dining district sandwiched between the CC and the DC, vastly increasing the amount of foot traffic those businesses would have on gameday and during conventions. You build a sky bridge from the new DC over 300W to the new Jazz District with elevated dining/entertainment options so it's not just a glorified "bridge", and you put an entrance to the DC on that level as well. The second level takes you all the way down to the CC second level.

Good. I've hated this building with a white hot passion ever since it went up:

It's ugly. It's suburban. That corner should not have a one-story low-density bank located there.

I agree, the Salt Palace makes a pretty large divide between the Gateway and Main St. It takes up quite a bit of very valuable land, and if possible it really should build upward in the future.

I think they could keep the Radisson and just demo some of the Salt Palace and those other little buildings. Move some of that lost convention space to the West Quarter or better utilize the space at 100 south and 200 west, or add a second story of convention meeting space to the existing main halls.

I agree completely with Comrade about that corner. Why didn't the county expand the Salt Palace fill out the rest of that block around the Radisson?

They should rebuild the Salt Palace in phases. Demo one block at a time and rebuild it with multiple levels and hotel and condominium towers on top of it. The outside of the building could have spaces for restaurants, bars and retail.

I like the idea of a connection to the Delta Center block but I think a tunnel would be better then a skybridge. Build the new arena on the current site with more convention space.

I found this interesting. We’re pretty far down the list when it comes to convention center size. I like RC14 ideas

Rebuild 100S Through Convention Center

Tying together a new Jazz Arena with a complete redesign of the convention center sounds great.

One recent news report mentioned a desire by some to build 100S through the convention center footprint to help reconnect the east and west halves of downtown.

That would definitely require one major redesign of the convention center.

We turn everything into a megaproject here but a new arena + convention center combo would be so good. too good even. I would be interested in that article if you remember

If the rumor is true, are the jazz just going to play at huntsman center for a few seasons? Maybe they are building the arena where the west convention center is so that delta center can remain operational during construction

If you go by exhibition size, Salt Lake isn't that far down, tho.

While we are talking about pie in the sky, Salt Palace rebuilds...

We should demo the current building and rebuild it so that the main event space is below grade. Incorporate the future arena site (currently the DC site), the Marriott, the APS site, kilowatt commons park and the Main Street tower site. Then the event floor could run seamlessly from the Arena to Main street. Convention goers would then spill out onto Main street allowing Main street to more directly benefit from convention traffic. This would also allow us to restore 100 S and 200 W at grade.

Above the main floor, we could build additional convention space if needed, hotels, apartment etc. In theory, this could be incorporated into the APS project and whatever happens on the Main Street tower site.

I don't know if this is physically possible. It's something I just thought of.
