Fully agree that the gated community sucks and shouldn't be allowed to proceed.

At the same time, do the FN of the province actually believe they are entitled to all undeveloped prime real estate in the city? Because not only is that unrealistic, it's also undemocratic for all other potential stakeholders as well.

My understanding is that not all FNs are entitled to all undeveloped land.

The FNs eligible are the ones who are specifically owed additional treaty reserve land, and the land they get first/preferential access to is surplus crown land. They can also buy privately owned land, but it's a whole process.

I don't see how renovating the park is going to help anyone. In my opinion it would be much better to spend the money on addictions treatment, more shelters, more transitional housing, etc.

The answer is simple. Municipal governments in Manitoba manage parks and public spaces. The Provincial government manages healthcare and social services.

Two different governments, two different levels of responsibility.

I know it's a rebuild of the park but I wish they'd just raze it and put a building there again. It's such an eyesore now and will continue to be if it remains as a park.

the bay building's main floor fronting north has been re-boarded up. looks terrible. i can't wait until portage place across the street is boarded up for a double-punch effect for our grand downtown avenue. either this means there's progress or they just had too many windows smashed recently and had to do something (which appears to be the case).

Do they still own the building? For some reason I thought that AC sold the building in a lease back a number of years ago when they were in financial trouble.

Anyone have any dirt on this development? It'll probably be worthy of its own thread once it gets going. Biggest benefit I can see beyond new housing stock is industrial and commercial land (and the jobs they bring) that is accessible to inner city residents reliably. Best way to reduce poverty is to get people meaningful work.

Latest I've heard is a request by the developer for an extension of time on the rezoning & subdivision at council last week.

They have been working on it for over a year. Most of the services, roads and retention ponds are partially in.
