Man I hope it's sooner than that, as if this whole project couldn't get more disappointing.

I mean I guess it's okay but could have been so much better.

I don't believe nimbyism had anything to do with that either. They radically reprogrammed the entire development, the 1,100' tall program featured condos and a hotel, both of which were axed, so a height cut like this can be easily explained without invoking yimby v. nimby conflict.

There can be a lot of nuance to changes like this height cut. I heard the less than ideal sales at One Bennett Park, among others, may have contributed. The nature of this location has also been speculated on as less than stellar for a hotel as well. We can speculate all day on it, but one thing we can say for certain is the height cut was not simply appeasement of some angry neighbors.

I'm of the belief that it was purely to cut costs as much as possible while still making good on their promise of "something substantial." I personally take larger issue with the terra cotta being VE'd out over the height reduction. I'd be in favor of them cutting it to 750 if it meant bringing back the original aesthetic.

I may be wrong but I believe the removal of the hotel was due to NIMBY's and complaints about traffic and density. The developer even had a hotel operator lined up who would co-brand the units. So I don't think they suddenly decided it would no longer work.

I believe this was indeed due to loud neighbors if i remember the community meetings right and the alderman's opposition too.

That's my recollection as well.

Cranky nextdoor townhouse NIMBYs we're instrumental in pressuring Reilly to make Related get rid of the hotel component.

Now, Related might've nixed it anyway (who the hell knows), but the way things played out, NIMBY bitching was the original impetus for the reprogramming/shortening of the project.

You are correct, I looked back from around that time and yes, the hotel was removed most probably due to the complaints that it should be removed, but my original point that the height cut was not nimbyism stands- the number of units in the building went up from the original proposal, and there were no complaints specifically directed at height. I'm not sure I'd believe that the removal of the hotel made the original height infeasible when that floor space could have been shifted to apartments or possibly even the condos that are no longer part of the project. The number of apartments increased to a number higher than the originally proposed count of apartments + condos, and that is what they're building. Perhaps related was worried about the prospect of turning a profit from leasing the entire project and felt safer going supertall with the hotel. Whatever the reason, Related was not asked to chop the height, nor was the height a major complaint, it appears that Related chose to cut a couple hundred feet off the towers for their own reasons. The fact that they VE'd the facade simultaneously is what has me believing it was an internal decision based on whatever numbers Related needs to feel comfortable with their investment.

How about the Bay-Adelaide Center West in Toronto? That thing was a stump forever and they managed to build a 51 story office building on it eventually (with a slightly different design as I recall). It was a source of much fascination on this forum. This is back in the day when there wasn't much going on beyond 400ft or so in Toronto.

EDIT: I looked it up and the stump was there from 1993 to 2006 when construction finally began on the 51 story building..

The more I think about it, the more it's actually pretty fascinating.

What a lovely crane. Looks brand spanking new. Liebherr HS 8200. Not sure where it was made or how expensive it is, but it is a German-Swiss multinational company. It's very hard to find the cost on such a thing even on used ones. If you have to ask for the price, you probably cannot afford it. " Price on Request "

I remember as a kid, the sports teams I wanted to win always lost when I watched the game. Felt the same way about Waterview tower. So here I occasionally check this building so as not to jinx it. I know ridiculous and not possible but still lol.

CTBUH agrees: https://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/462-east-north-water-street/37138

CTBUH says this is the 9th tallest under-construction (including "ST" and "AT") building in the country:

No, it is still expected to be 851 ft. It will be the 21st building in town that exceeds 800 ft.
