TRU causing major problems with overpass

Kamloops city council wants to see headway soon on a $10-million pedestrian overpass spanning Summit Drive, voting Tuesday to tell project partner Thompson Rivers University it isn’t interested in further deliberations over whether to change the location of the bridge.

The cost of the pedestrian and bicycle overpass is intended to be split equally between TRU and the City of Kamloops. Last spring, council decided to allocate $5 million in provincial funding to the project.

However, council heard Tuesday that the city and TRU have yet to come to an agreement on a location for the bridge.

"I'm bothered by TRU, which said in 2023 that this could be built in two years — so we were gung-ho. … Now they’re playing games, now they’re talking of other locations,” said Coun. Dale Bass.

“I only voted for it because I thought it was going to happen. When I start hearing partners we're dealing with saying, 'Well, let's talk about this, let's talk about that, maybe let's get another study,’ I start wondering if anything's ever going to happen.”

* my question is this. Why does it seem the more educated you are, the less you EVER get accomplished? Just get your shit together TRU and get the job started. Enough dicking around.
They have done multiple studies on this already and now Matt Milovick of TRU says that if the city wants to push the fact they will just cancel the deal. He sounds like an asshole that has been given to much authority in effecting an entire project and shouldn't be in charge of anything to do with it. Like most people in his position, he is abusing his position.

TRU like every post secondary institution nowadays is full of people who think they're smarter than they actually are. Look at where TRU wants to put the overpass (yellow arrow). It's pretty much beside the intersection. People will continue to jaywalk summit drive if they put it there. The City has it right with their location (red arrow). It catches everyone from the North side of the campus to use the overpass, and for everyone that lives on Dalgleish walking to school to also use it.

Agreed 100% . If you build it that close to the lights, why would you walk up hill to go over the road when you can just run across. Its about safety really... They would have to also build a large fence on either side to make sure the jay walking ended.

Its almost like they want to adjust the location to say THEY decided where it was to be built. In reality they should be happy that the city will maintain it and pay for overruns that are surely to pop up. I truly hope it just gets built. We here in Kamloops are so used to big dreams and cthen watching them get dashed.

KAMLOOPS CANCER CENTRE TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION IN 2025

Construction will begin next year on a long-promised cancer care center in Kamloops, according to B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix.

The five-storey building and associated enhancements to Royal Inland Hospital is expected to come with a total price tag of $359 million.

Dix made the announcement Thursday to a crowd gathered in the hospital’s atrium. He said the facility's business plan had been approved in less than a year — a process that typically takes 18 months.

“This is big news for people in the Kamloops region,” he said.

“I hope this will become part of the fabric of life in Kamloops."

Would be a shame if this project fell through because of a location disagreement. At least we'll have an answer soon though. Didn't sound like the city was going to entertain TRU's additional report they want to do. I'm glad they cities putting their foot down. The overpass isn't meant to just service TRU, it's meant to benefit both parties.

If it was 1 storey I'd say so, but at 2 it seems like a good size. It is crazy the extent of retaining walls though. Pineview, isn't my cup of tea, but the setting with all the ponds and trails around this school, will make for a cool learning environment for the kids. Also this project spurs the construction of a new road that will connect Pineview to Aberdeen.

I live up in Pineview, and man they are moving QUICK on the construction of that school and getting all the services/roads put in leading to it.

I think its super neat that this is the only school in Kamloops that backs onto a true forest and isn't completely Urban, atleast I believe it is, correct me if im wrong lol. Might make for some interesting wildlife encounters and learning opportunities

There seems to be a six storey building project that is posted on the ‘Mundi Construction’ page. Not too much is said on their website, other than that it holds 83 rooms and supposedly will be ready for 2025. No location was posted for the project, nor was there any further detail given, I’m not sure if their estimation for the open date is either accurate as well…

Took a quick look on the development applications map, and this might be where they are planning to build this. No way to confirm or deny without doing a bit more digging but certainly plausible.

Does anyone know the status or have any update on when the next building is set to go up? Or if it would ever go up? The lot next to it has been left untouched for quite some time… I have seen that the crane is still up so I’m assuming that they are still hoping to have the next one going…

Really? Hopefully it goes up rather than to have an empty lot it’s a great building with actual Color’s and it is in a great downtown location…

Its been sitting for a long time. I had been told that originally they had wanted to go 10 floors but it didnt pan out. Im not holding my breath on this one. In fact Im wondering iff the crane will eventually fall over into the other building.

Yeah Hopefully another developer would plan to do something to this lot, it is an amazing location. Sorry to change topics on you guys, but I was driving downtown today, and noticed the crane at city gardens has been lifted higher… I thought I was going crazy and that it was always that high, but then compared old pictures and realized, i’m guessing it was lifted in the last day… [IMG]

You're not going crazy, haha. It was lifted on the weekend. I was on site Monday morning and it was already raised then.

Found these updated hi-res renderings of the PAC. The LED screens on the curved curtain wall would look awesome.
Also like how they moved the lobby staircase from the center of the lobby, to the South wall so the lobby space is more open for random other events that wouldn't take place in the theatre.
If it turns out like this, it's going to be impressive.

I'm in full support of the PAC and always will be, I just wish they would've incorporated housing of some sort on top.

The public backlash would be much less I feel even if it was substantially more expensive, but with housing units to help contribute to the solution to the housing crisis as well as make it seem like a more mutually beneficial building to the community instead of just a portion of the community, specifically the arts community.

Super excited to see it go up though.

I feel like housing on top would just be a hindrance. Like no noise after 10pm etc. I don’t think housing and entertainment really go hand in hand.
