There was a $4 million permit pulled by Hipperson for upgrades to the Staples Arena. I understand that its sister, the Hamilton Arena is getting the same treatment. Does anyone have the deets on this and whether they will remain open during construction? Work is supposed to take 1.5 years!

https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/helping-build-more-homes-faster-in-regina-848910436.html
REGINA, SK, Feb. 9, 2024 /CNW/ - With federal funding and federal leadership, we are changing how cities let housing get built in their municipalities. With a greater focus on higher density housing, student housing, homes near transit and affordable housing we are going to get more homes built for Canadians at prices they can afford.

Today, the Government of Canada and the City of Regina announced that they reached an agreement to fast track over 1,000 homes over the next three years. This work will help spur the construction of more than 3,000 homes over the next decade.

With 4 units permitted as of right for every residential lot, savvy developers should do OK ripping down small bungalows in older areas and replacing them with 4-plexes.

Rosemont has seen several of these go up on random lots where a houses burn down. There are some huge lots in Rosemont, my brother built a garage about the size of his house and had a sizeable backyard remaining. https://maps.app.goo.gl/mTn18eGTdBmrBXD36 (there used to be 1 building on that lot)

This infill housing is in Calgary's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood and was completed in 2011.

Regina deserves better IMHO.

That reminds me of the house near the pump track in Lakeview.

Here's hoping that we get a lot of good infill with this infusion of federal money, not just more endless sprawl we won't support with transit or walkability.

Hamilton has been closed for the whole season already.

A few pics from yesterday / today. https://imgur.com/a/BVMM1cM

Out at the Cargill plant there was a crane near the bridge they are building. They might start adding beams soon, though I didn't see any nearby yet.

It makes sense—provinces are responsible for road work and maintenance, and the federal government will continue to help pay for that. But new projects should be targeted towards densification of transit as much as possible (i.e. public transit). There isn't any need for new major highways between cities, so most of what this is talking about is new roadways inside cities, where the goal should be to create as much densification as possible through infill development.

Trucking is the lifeblood of Western Canada. There are substantially more and bigger transports on the roads every year. This growth is likely to continue unless we kneecap ag, industry and consumer spending.

Lets put transport on a completely separate roadway. Made of steel with steel wheels for durability and efficiency.

City of Regina tender out for deep geothermal heating plant design. No details, prospective bidders need to sign an NDA to see the details. Likely part of the Lawson replacement which was to include geothermal heating.

Yes, that is how the got Federal dollars. Interested to see the payback on this. Hopefully it is not 100 years.

Trains are great for vast bulk over long distances. They are not generally efficient where you you have to load on to trucks on both ends anyway.
