I have noticed the screen having always one or two buggy lines. I hope such basic thing can be remedied. Also, do those close-ups suggest that they actually emit light in both direction and also inwards?

Klazu, the LED is noticeable from the inside. When the video was taken from in the dental office, the LED screen was illuminated at a 100%. I'd say 10% was bleeding on the backside of the screen.
During the day light hours (specially on a sunny day) you hardly notice it. But the office workers will definitely notice it when the sun goes down.

Maybe it could be used as light therapy in winter?

So, residents have moved in months ago but I have still to see the expensive screen being on and displaying something artsy. I wonder what gives? They could fix bugs seen on it when it was first tested?

I feel you, my fiance and I have driven past it at night more than a dozen times with no luck. Hopefully, they'll announce when it'll be booted up.

Working an office space on the 3rd floor today

The screen was not on all day. It don't even have to be artsy, it could be Christmassy.
Two pictures of the backside of the screen...These photographs are no Klazu , but they're fun

Working a 4th floor office space at the North Tower yesterday

There was no Art Display on the big screen when I was there (daylight hours). Info on the screen PLANAR Installation Profile
I wonder if there has been any activity on the display. The next time I'm in the area in the evening or night, I'll check it out.
View of the South Tower from the 4th floor commercial elevator lobby...............................And back side of the screen from 4th floor office suite.

Nope, nada. I have yet to see the display on since the testing period. It's very disappointing.

Interesting article on everyone's favourite paper about all the drama behind why the display on the Gold House tower never went on, or at least why it never stayed on after they initially tested it, and how it's now escalated all the way to a Supreme Court petition:-

At least now we have an idea why it's remained dark, and it's also encouraging to see the City actually pressing them to have it turned on like they pledged to have it and was agreed upon during their application process :-

Quote:
A giant, three-storey, mesh LED screen on the side of a Burnaby Metrotown condo tower that hasn't lit up since 2021 has become the subject of a legal battle.
.....
Celebrated as the largest non-commercial urban art LED display in North America when the tower was complete in 2020, the screen was envisioned as a public art canvas and promised to be a dramatic addition to the city's vaunted Beresford Art Walk.

After lighting up Metrotown for about a month, however, the screen went blank.

A petition filed by the Gold House strata in B.C. Supreme Court this week sheds light on why.

In 2021, the owners of two fourth-storey units "unilaterally removed" transformers from their lots needed to make the screen operable, according to allegations in the petition.

"Due to the removal of the transformers, the digital screen is currently inoperable," states the petition.

The strata says the building's developer, Rize Alliance Properties, and the City of Burnaby had a covenant agreeing Rize would install the giant screen as a public art installation in exchange for rezoning approvals.

When the building was finished, they entered a second covenant to ensure owners wouldn't do anything that would "interfere with the functioning of the digital screen," according to the petition.

Because of that covenant, the strata's bylaws prohibit any alteration to strata lots that would "adversely interfere with the digital screen."

In February 2023, the strata says it was contacted by the city's lawyers demanding the strata "take immediate action to make the digital screen operable once more."

Between April and June 2023, Rize retained a contractor who inspected all the units on the fourth floor and found the transformers had been removed in only two units: 403 and 405, owned by Hope Health Holdings Ltd. and a numbered company (1341094 Ltd.) respectively.

Neither of the owners has been co-operative, according to the petition.

Both have taken the position the covenant is illegal and the transformers were illegally installed, the petition says, and both have now refused further access to their units.

The city is threatening legal action, according to the petition, but the strata says it can't carry out its obligations under the bylaws and covenant because of the owners.

The strata has applied to the court for injunctions compelling the owners to allow inspections and work to be done to fix the screen.

It is also asking for declarations that the owners breached the strata’s bylaws by removing the transformers and not allowing the inspections.

The petition also asks the court to find the owners liable for "all reasonable costs involved in repairing the digital screen caused by their tampering and removal of the transformers."
4th storey seems to indicate it's one of the Office units occupants - as do to the names associated with them in the article.
So it seems like a couple of the businesses didn't wan't the displays lighting up outside their offices.

Whenever I pass by on the skytrain it seems like at least some of those units are dental offices - although we can't be certain that it's the same units that were housing the disabled transformers.

I gotta say, that's not a good spot of design by the designers of the building to locate critical electrical components within a unit that would require the unit owner's permission to maintain or even have them turned on.
Rather than have them in a more common (but secured) area.

Looks like those owners are getting out? 405 just closed in January and 403 is listed as a sublease.

If it's true, then it's amazing what (the threat of) a lawsuit will do to motivate people.

It's all fun and games until your getting dragged to the Supreme Court.

Lol "illegal covenant". In otherwords, a covenant they don't like. Public art covenants are pretty standard. I'm assuming the lights were more annoying than they expected, but instead of accepting they made a mistake when signing the lease, they decided to literally pull the plug.

If they've found it that annoying that it was worth fighting in court, I wouldn't also be surprised if they got a discount on the lease due to the perceived negative impacts of the lights.

How sad is it that during a housing crisis that the City of Burnaby would require the developer to put a giant screen for art just to get approval for rezoning.

How sad is it that after 15 years trolling here you'd still make a comment like that. All developments of a certain scale - rezonings or not - in Burnaby (and elsewhere) are expected to provide public art in some form, (and a CAC if appropriate on rezoning). Gold House is no different, and the giant screen was Rize's idea. 'The housing crisis' was helped by them maxing out the number of apartments allowed here, and providing a financial contribution to the affordable housing fund as part of the rezoning. (It was ten years ago, before the inclusive rental bonusing was introduced).

Please, enlighten us as to how public art alleviates the housing shortage.

Also, for those who have knowledge of such screens, what would be the rough monthly energy usage, which one assumes the strata is on the hook for?

You just carry on being the joyless, negative commentator who snipes from the sidelines about things like requiring developers to provide public art. Clearly you skipped the art appreciation class, so enlightenment would be an impossibility.

Strange though - usually a lis pendens would be filed against title to the property and would need to be cleared before a sale.

Also, you would have thought that the transformers could be housed in a truly common area (easily accessible) rather than within particular strata units.
