I am wondering if developers in Edmonton are paying people to speak in favour of their permitting and approval process and appear before City Council - like the developer in Kelowna who did this per the article below. Does the City of Edmonton have rules around this or an investigative way to determine the legitimacy of speakers? I suppose I could direct my question to Councillor Anne Stevenson given her city planning background.

Construction is underway on the Government Centre North Plaza revitalization at the Alberta Legislature Grounds in Edmonton. Built in the 1970s, our team collaborated with Government of Alberta and Janet Rosenberg & Studio to redesign the North Plaza to preserve the existing and historic mature tree canopy, improve the pedestrian promenade and terraced seating areas, rebuild the reflecting pool and ornamental dome fountain, and transform the terraced wading pools into three interconnected, interactive spray parks.

Inspired by Alberta’s natural landforms and climate regions, the design will include native plantings from the Prairies and granite boulders mined from mountains made of Rundle stone.

That streetscape project better include a full reconsruction of the 101 St. and 104 Ave instersection, the pavement and crosswalks need some TLC badly.

Huh so the pedway is in detailed design and the streetscape is in prelim stages.

Also: "Other participants questioned the effectiveness of an urban revitalization strategy which puts pedestrian traffic underground,"

I think I said this months ago and I think we still don't know why a pedway is needed if the goal is to enhance public safety and improve the public realm. Do we know who is paying for the new pedway? Is it mostly Qualico and a small amount by the City and Province for the Law Courts portion?

Also are downtown shared use paths effective? Especially where bus stops are?

The current shared use path goes behind the bus stops and shelters on 103A Avenue so if the rest of it is designed in the same way it could work ok (I bike this route daily for commuting and am looking forward to the improvements).

I have to agree with you. The reasons for that pedway are frankly 99% lacking. A waste of precious finances, especially ongoing security issues if a new pedway went into that area.

They opted to wait to address the UG membrane replacement as well.
