Canadian Birkebeiner race has been canceled here due to lack of snow. We have snow flurries in the forecast but not much.

Snow in the shaded areas is disappearing now. Heading out to Elk Island National Park on the weekend to see if I can find some snow.

We usually get a January thaw but this is a full on melt. 13 when I went home yesterday. Was doing yard clean up last night. I don't do that until at least April.

Currently -2 going up to 6 today. looks like seasonal weather coming next week.

Used my snow blower once this season and that was only to make sure it worked. (Good thing as I found one battery not charging).

It's supposed to be 5C today....usually its about 3 to 10 degrees below that from my memory.

Average high for this day is about -2, so yeah about a 7 degree swing. Of course, single day readings don't really mean much. Averages are a more accurate indicator. We ran about 2 degrees above average (for high temperatures - low temperatures are more extreme but I suspect that is more to do with urban heat island effect than climate change). And since our last real extreme winter (2014-2015), it's been the norm for a majority of the winter months to be running at least slightly above average.

I'm of two minds with the climate change thing; of course it is pretty disheartening to see the effects in real time. But realistically, it's out of my hands, and I might as well enjoy more pleasant weather when & where I can.

I spent $150 last fall for a detailed and long overdue servicing of my 35 year old Honda snowblower (an amazing machine - it was the first thing I bought when I moved to Moncton and still works like clockwork). Despite this expense, I too have only used it once this winter so far, and the need then was questionable.

Last time an all star game was here it was for the NBA in 2016. It was the coldest weekend in like 20 years. Going to be much, much more tolerable for the NHL this weekend. Just above zero, but more importantly... sunny!

Yesterday Victoria (Gonzales weather station) broke the record high for that station (records go back to 1973) at 13.1. The record low for Feb 1 was -2.3 back in 1996.

A prolonged winter storm is expected Sunday evening to Wednesday morning.

Projected total snowfall:

Clarenville, Bonavista, and northwestern Avalon: 30 to 50 cm
St. John's and northeastern Avalon: 15 to 25 cm

Projected total rainfall: potentially up to 25 mm over parts of the northern Avalon.

Maximum wind gusts: northeasterly between 60 and 80 km/h.

Locations: the northeast coast of Newfoundland from the northern Avalon to the Bonavista Peninsula.

Remarks: Precipitation will begin as snow, but quickly transition to rain over the Avalon Peninsula. It is possible the Bonavista and Clarenville areas will receive some rain as well, but this is less certain. Snow is expected to return over all regions by Tuesday, accompanied by strong northeasterly winds that may cause significant visibility reductions in blowing snow. Snowfall is expected to taper to flurries by Wednesday morning.

There is considerable uncertainty associated with this system, especially with the total amount and location of the maximum precipitation. The public is advised to monitor for future updates on this system, especially those planning events or expecting to travel in the area.

A skier took to TikTok this week to share the utterly disappointing conditions at Whistler Blackcomb, where at least one run is melting to reveal fissures of mud.

Soleil Patterson, an accomplished athlete from Rossland, BC, who skied for the University of Anchorage Alaska and Team BC, is no stranger to epic days on the mountain.

But her visit to Whistler Blackcomb on Wednesday wasn’t one of those days.

She shared footage of her skis across a cracked and muddy ski run. While it wasn’t in the Alpine, it wasn’t exactly close to the village either. And a clip from the chairlift showed the mud peeking through for much of the run....

The city was completely shut down for 8 days. A whole bartering economy sprung up - people putting diapers and cans of food in the snowbank for people to take. After 3-4 days the City finally accepted it went on longer than they advised people to prepare, so with the army's help some superettes and groceries opened. It was an insane experience, and great practice for us just weeks before COVID lockdowns.

And, this being St. John's, we made the best of it.

Man, this is why I take long term forecasts with a grain of salt. This wasn't even mentioned as a possibility a few days ago. IIRC, TWN was calling for something like 1-3 cm each day through the weekend.

A prolonged period of snowfall is expected.

Locations: Central and eastern Nova Scotia.

Total snowfall amounts: 30 to 40 cm for central Nova Scotia with up to 80 cm or possibly higher for eastern mainland and Cape Breton.

Time span: Tonight until Monday.

Remarks: A low pressure system southwest of Nova Scotia will slowly track eastward tonight. This low will intensify on Saturday and become quasi-stationary southeast of the province resulting in a prolonged period of snow for the region.

Additionally, increasing northeasterly winds could result in reduced visibilities in blowing snow over exposed areas tonight and into the weekend.

Snow will taper to flurries Sunday night or Monday.
