This is how you end up with torched trucks blocking the ports, infrastructure sabotage and economic collapse because you cannot enforce calm after up-ending the BCTA like that. They'll rip you apart.

has the BCTA even come out with any statement on any of these overpass strikes? or done anything to try and rectify how terrible all these drivers are? they should be the first to try and stop this. because its making them all look like idiots.

What country do you think this is?

The public has zero tolerance for these idiots. BCTA among others should have their feet held to the fire.

They should install new cabs where it automatically raises to the top point of their load and they'll become more invested in finding a safe route.

so... $2,002 fine, estimated 1.7m in repair costs over 2 months.

fines are too low. needs to be much higher. needs to go up exponentially with each strike.

Company fined $2,000 for collision that damaged Hwy. 17A overpass

The company involved in last summer’s crash that damaged the Hwy. 17A overpass on Hwy. 99 has been fined a total of $2,002.

Bright Sky Disposal Ltd. was issued the violation tickets totalling that amount...

The ministry will also work through its claims division with the vehicle operator’s insurer, to maximize recovery of repair costs, said the ministry...

...The cause of the accident was listed as, “driver error/failed to secure bin properly,” according to the ministry’s Commercial Vehicle Bridge/Overpass Crash Report.

Why aren’t they suing the company for the cost of repairs.

Gov's feet are colder than mine right now.

I feel like this is part of the problem. Fleet trucks are getting taller both in cab and trailer deck height. This is in turn causing clearance issues with older infrastructure.
As we've seen the obvious solution for this is to demolish the bridge and build it taller.

Brunette overpass has been hit from the eastbound lanes. Helicopter fuselage on a flat bed, it looks like the rotor hub scraped on the overpass structure.

The same truck possibly also hit the Gilmore overpass.

Article is about a giant queue at the North Van London Drugs superchargers but interesting North Van will get 20 additional chargers down at Marine Drive by February.

Quote:
The North Shore is home to eight per cent of the province's total Tesla population. Locally, the number of these EVs increased to 3,488 in 2022, up from 697 in 2018. Following the same trend, that number could have grown by another 1,000 vehicles in 2023.

I'm surprised no one has posted this - Traffic is climbing on some Metro Vancouver bridges. Others, not so much

Quote:
New data from the B.C. government shows some of the Lower Mainland’s bridges have seen a dramatic increase in traffic.

The figures from the Ministry of Transportation show a major spike on bridges crossing the Fraser River compared to five years ago, while traffic to the North Shore has grown much more slowly.

...

Andy Yan, director of Simon Fraser University’s City Program believes there are several key factors underpinning the changes.

“One in three transportation jobs and one in four manufacturing jobs, those people live south of the Fraser,” Yan said.

“These are folks who are in jobs that they have to show up for their jobs, as opposed to, say, work from home.”

Meanwhile, he said, downtown Vancouver’s importance as a nucleus for work and business in the city has receded.

Growth across the region has seen the growth of numerous economic centres around Metro Vancouver, Yan said.

“This really points to the challenge of ensuring we have a transportation network, as opposed to a spoke-hub in and out of downtown,” Yan said.

...

The entire Gateway Program was predicated on there being tolls to manage demand (i.e. reduce demand)
so that the capacity (and congestion) would remain manageable for the next 35 (?) years.
The NDP threw that out the door.

Could you imagine the transit fantasy land we could be living in if the Port Mann was still tolled and Translink was allowed to toll the Pattullo?

You know with that couple billion saved they would have just used it to build another lane on the TCH through Langley and not transit right?

Well that kind of makes sense. With their already high traffic levels is there any room to grow?

Exactly. For several years now both bridges have been at their ultimate capacity during peak periods and still very busy the rest of the day. There simply hasn't been room for any kind of substantial growth. The improvements at the north end of the Second Narrows haven't done much to alleviate the bottleneck of the bridge itself.

The Purple line is the golden opportunity to replace the bridge.

A combined road and skytrain structure.

My fantasy project is there would 6 wide general purpose lanes, 2 bus lanes, and two truck / port only traffic lanes, and of course Skytrain.

Seeing how there will never be a third crossing and how limited the Lions Gate is, a bridge of this size is warranted.

Got into once on Reddit with a guy who was so anti car that they were completely against the inclusion of any road improvements as part of building a transit structure across the Second Narrows. Just didn't understand the whole kill-two-birds-with-one-stone efficiency.

It just makes sense to do it all at once.
