Really? How can so many people support such a fringe woke-left party?? Even in Paris, LFI (the equivalent of QS) is not supported by a majority of the electorate.

Québec solidaire is at 27% on the island of Montréal, so far from a majority.

I was thinking more like this. Though this guy is the spokesperson (and a former city councillor), a lot of Hasidic (orthodox) Jews are close to being unilingual in Yiddish, and only speak a little English and even less French.

What's funny is the format is sooooo American. Except for the language, it could be some US news station. You would never see such a format in France, journalist being displayed next to 2 other journalists located in other places. Also they love those live reports with journalists 'on the scene' to give it a more realistic (or sensationalist?) touch. We don't do that here. Also the flashy colors, so typically Americans on news channels.

Why funny? It's not a report from France.

QS would be to the right of the Socialists in France no?

No, more like LFI.

The LFI candidate got 30.1% of votes in the City of Paris at the 2022 presidential election. 22.0% at the national level.

I think the PS in France is a mix of the federal Liberals and the federal NDP in Canada.

There is no equivalent to the PS at the Quebec level, though the old PQ would have been close.

I agree that QS is quite similar to LFI.

Yeah, the old left-wing of the PQ was like the PS in France.

As for LFI, of course the big difference with QS is their personality: LFI types are mean, often violent and vindicative, in a way even a QS Québécois will never be. There's something kinder and friendlier in the North American mentality, and even the QS politicians strike me as much more pleasant and friendly than the LFI politicians.

LFI politicians are more like this:

Or of course this, their candidate in the last 3 presidential elections (hard to imagine such a yelling lunatic in Québec politics... PS: This yelling lunatic got 30% of votes in the City of Paris 2 years ago )

Mmm... we've been following the coverage from TF1/LCI/BFM about the French farmer protests, and I recall there were at least a few live reports. My SO did comment how rude and condescending some of the news anchors and commentators were, kind of like listening to la radio poubelle. Makes LCN sound high-brow in comparison.

It's a different genre though. Not some daily reporting (which wouldn't make use of live reporting on the scene), but some exceptional event, especially strikes, of which the French media are quite fond (whereas when I lived in the US, strikes were never reported, which always, well, struck me as odd).

The French are always under the impression they are reenacting 1789 and this time nothing will ever be the same.

I just don't get the appeal of the vindictive left from a North America politics point-of-view. One sees that more on the right side of the political spectrum here.

One sells left-leaning policies with 'sunny ways' inclusive branding in North America. Mélenchon-style left elitism might as well be anathema when appealing to the people he's ostensibly trying to court.

Admittedly Jagmeet Singh or Parizeau is about the closest we've come to left-elitism. Their messages may have been about the people, but their other choices broadcast a different message.

Going from PQ to Early-Nationalist-CAQ then back to PQ when the CAQ disappoints isn’t being fickle. Canadian voters are much more fickle if you consider that a bunch of them want to switch from Trudeau who they voted for in the past, to the current Reform-flavored CPC.

BLM protests did dominate the news cycle in Canada and the US at least. That'd be the type of manifestation North Americans are interested in.

Race and sex, the two drivers of US television. Plus ça change...

You're right that the MAGA etc. types are more aggressive in the US, but Democrats like The Squad et al and some other Dems representing minorities down there can be aggressive too.

You're right about Canada, especially the NDP which is pretty calm. QS is a bit more aggressive than the NDP though nothing like LFI.

That said, the North American is definitely elitist and increasingly so with every passing year. Every bit as much as their brothers and sisters in Europe are.

You are actually arguing Quebec isn't dramatically more fickle than the RoC?

10% who voted for Harper then Trudeau are now back to voting for PP. The core of each party has stayed. Nothing like a sizeable group in QC who are 2008 Con voter and BloQ voters who in 2011 NDP then 2015 Liberal 2021 Bloq.

I might call all of that "shrewd" as opposed to "fickle".
