As much as being able to brag we have a skyscraper that's the tallest in Atlantic Canada, and enough to rival Montreal height, I do think it would look out of place. I prefer 2x25, but I also won't be strongly opposed if the 50 storeys do happen. If Moncton's population growth continues to rise steadily, it might not even be that out-of-place by the time it is finished.

A 50s building would be roughly similiar in height to the NBTel Tower? If this was build on the Ashford property behind Assumpion is wouldn't look bad IMO. This would also push developers to build 25s+ going forward.

The Bell-Aliant tower is approximately 35 storey equivalent. 50s is very, very tall.

This is very true, and is not a problem that Moncton has.

The only reason to go to 50 storey in Moncton is to make a statement. That statement is already being made by the Infinity Tower which, at 30 storey, will still be the tallest building in NB.

Someone else said a few months back that there was a competition brewing between developers for their downtown projects as to whose would be tallest. I guess Ashford intends to win. Icon is maxing out at 30 storeys with Infinity. Lafford seems happy with 2 x 22 storey with the Two Brothers. Trevor Ritchie has chosen to go as high as 18 storey for St, Bernard Place.

Moncton is just fortunate to have a small group of committed developers (ICON, Ashford, Lafford, Ritchie) willing to invest to make our downtown a better place.

There is only 19 buildings taller than 50 storeys in Canada excluding the GTA. That number reaches 69 when you include the GTA. Those other 19 buildings are located exclusively in Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Burnaby. There is some in Mississauga but I included them in the GTA total. Certainly woukd be a statement at 50 storeys! I don’t know that the market is ready to support that kind of building but I think it would become a draw. Is Moncton on the cusp of rocketing up the population charts for Canadian cities?

Metro Moncton's population in 2024 should be roughly 180,000, If you cut Metro Moncton's current growth rate in half we would still reach a population of 250,000 in 13-15 years. In 2 decades The Metro area could reach 300 000. I know population growth isn't linear which is why I cut the growth rate in half for my estimates. In 25-30 years does the Shediac area get Amalgamated into Moncton?

I had read somewhere that the population census report should come out in the next month or so. We were the fastest growing CMA last year in all of Canada, but we are a long way to go to even be at par with some ON cities outside the GTA.

Shediac has currently 11,000 people as rough estimate right? It is my dream for them to be added to the CMA but Monctonrad has explained that Shediac is pretty much self-sufficient right now (and they are also enjoying a boom in construction recently).

Thanks for doing this research. I was just thinking the other evening which CMAs in Canada have a building this tall, and, although I didn't look anything up, I came to a similar list as you. A 50 storey building would place Moncton in stratospheric company.

I believe that a really tall proposal is pending in Kelowna BC. It is in the 45-55 storey range if I recall. Kelowna has a CMA population of about 225,000 - not much larger than Moncton.

I think Shediac's inclusion in the Moncton CMA is inevitable. As the town grows, commuting patterns will change, and the connection between the two communities will only strengthen. I predict Shediac will be in the CMA within 20-25 years.

With the recent development for Scoudouc's industrial park, I assume it would include moving deliveries to and from the airport. Will that count for commuting patterns? Or is it strictly more about public transit and private commutes for work?

Looking at the photos posted by Infinity Aerials on Facebook. That area really could have a nice cluster of buildings. With the Icon building at 30 floors, the lot next to it, could house two towers say 18 - 25 floors. I’m just day dreaming but I could picture a nice 5 floor street front podium with one Tower towards the front on the corner of King and Main and then a secondary one set back a bit closer to Harper’s lane and Harper’s street corner.

Apparently Irving owns that property, and they aren't prone to selling land. But if there ever was a lot that's prime for development this is it. It's considerably larger than the ICON property, so 2 towers would be a slam dunk.

And directly across the street is a nice piece of land between the Park House Inn and the Running Room strip mall. A mixed use building there would greatly boost the cluster.

The units above the podium/parking share the cost of building the foundation and base, so more above means less cost per unit.

Here is one of the Infinity Aerials photos in question:

Infinity Aerial photo

Fresh off the press. You can see the boom crane on site.

Not only would it be the tallest in Canada outside of major cities, it also would be in the USA as well. There is only 20 cities with a building that is 50 storeys in height or taller, the smallest of which are New Orleans & Oklahoma City. If you’re looking for what it would look like on a skyline, OKC has a 50 storey building and it sticks out like a sore thumb.

In the drone shot of the ICON land, it looks like there's more undeveloped land the next block over.

The newspaper article doesn't have anything new that we haven't alreasy discussed on SSP, but, you know what they say, - if it's in the T&T, it's gotta be true!!! Right???

I just love how the city motto is reflected by Infinity and the other big projects happening in the next 2-5 years.
