I think we'll see more and more happening on parts of Barton in the coming years. It may just become the "new" James.

Other streets are deserving of love too, and not just downtown/central city. Kenilworth and Parkdale, for example. Dundurn too. It will take time though.

Yeah, the part of Barton between Victoria and Wentworth is already quite different than it was a decade ago. There's still a few empty/abandoned buildings here and there but theres less of them with every year that passes. Kinda makes sense since its by far the most walkable and attractive section of the street.

I do believe Kenilworth or Parkdale will become the next Ottawa St. there's definitely great potential for that on both streets
Barton has its spots... but it needs some major investments

When I was a kid (1970s) Kenilworth had much more retail activity; lately it has not been great, though there are stores. Parkdale always seemed a bit lacking back then, but maybe that was just because it began its post-industrial north-end "transition" sooner.

Ottawa St. was still mostly the textile place to go back then. It has diversified, though I'd love to see more restaurants and pubs there. When I'm ready to buy a home again, I'll probably look at the blocks surrounding it.

Barton is such a long street. We'll probably see certain blocks revive while others remain sparse. Eventually I hope most of it is revitalized in a complete way.

mm. Barton, as others have said, is such a looooong street. I t would be nice to think of barton as quality - but , like the lister block before it, it's come to be such an iconic symbol of what everyone feels when they think of hamilton.

I used to take the #2 bus every day to go to mohawk back in the day and I saw.. far too much of this street.. and it always just felt.. so depressing.. frozen in time but slowly rotting, the buildings, and the people..

we used to play "spot the normal person" where we'd see someone from behind that looked normal, and we'd state if they were normal or a crackhead before the bus passed them - and then turn around and see their face and go "whoaaa!" - it was sad. And that was 20 years ago.

I used to DESPISE going to ottawa st as a kid as my mom did a lot of her own sewing and would drag me from textile place to textile place- the 5 story one is my most hated one hahaha.. but yeah, its definitely diversified more - it feels almost like dundas that street. I live near kenilworth on lawrence and I would love to see that street get some tlc - only thing it gets nowadays are buildings that mysteriously "burn down" one by one...

Saw this listing for 208 King E, offers a glimpse of what is inside. Always thought that this would make a fabulous rehab. So much work to do (not demo though, looks like someone started an ambitious project and gave up or ran out of cash)

Honestly looks like a decent amount of work has occurred on it already. I remember they had a fairly high value building permit issued a while ago for the renovations - IIRC something north of $8 million. It's a shame that it failed.

Hopefully someone competent (i.e. CoreUrban) picks it up and finishes it.. It's a great building and I suspect the International Village will only be doing better in the coming years with the amount of intensification being completed around it.

If that's the case, I have to believe it's due to an investor(s) pulling out.

I hope it's not due to them spending all the money they originally had allocated to this, as judging by how much there is still left to do - that would mean they severely underestimated the cost.

Dear GOD thats a fixer upper - also blackened brick on the inside? Looks like there may have been a fire inside at some point..?

The interior very much feels like one of the school interiors that stinson was working on - just.. a lot of work.. but all that nice brick.. really needs all those windows opened up though, or just.. re-added.

The plan must be to purchase the corner houses (might already be in the process of doing so. This is to me the first sign of things to come for this area of downtown. This section between Cannon and York, James and Bay has shown little promise until recently.
More properties as part of this land Assembly it seems. Looks like Lamb is trying to do the entire block from Cannon to Vine, bounded by Park at the west: "Also of note in Hamilton, Lamb Development Corp. purchased 53-55 Cannon St W and 108 Park St N - an assembly which totals 0.42 acres - for $4,350,000 or approximately $10,300,000/acre, which is on par for high-density land." From Forge&Foster.

Will be making a land Assembly thread over on Urban Toronto once I get the go ahead from the mods.

I'll feel better about Lamb when he completes more projects here.

That said, he's doing more than others have been.

He’s building Television City right now and has applications in for his next build on Main St, so he is still doing things. Plus he just threw $10 million down for that property.
