Well yes. Identitarianism is by nature xenophobic.

But identitarianism is not equivalent to nationalism. There are many forms of nationalism.

Edit: To expand on that last point, consider the PQ. Obviously it's a coalition-type party that has changed and evolved through the years. But it has always been nationalist, and it has always been the exact opposite of xenophobic: it seeks to expand the nation. Bill 101 was a very successful project that created a civic nation that could include all sorts of minorities and immigrants, as long as they were willing to communicate in la langue commune.

The CAQ doesn't have much of a vision, it has always had the incoherence typical of any populist party, but the past six years have made it clear that, compared to the PQ, its vision of the Quebec nation is far narrower and far more exclusionary. I'm not alone in that assessment.

Hyperbole and shortcuts aside, at least Legault doesn't shy away from labels and is self-aware. The CAQ just had its party congress and this is what came out of it:

Legault a nommé cinq priorités: l'éducation, la santé, l'économie, l'environnement et l'identité québécoise.

It is the last one that is problematic for those who are not de souche.

What does this mean for their place and their status within Quebec?

What does it mean for "Les Autres"................

If only Legault had had five years in power to focus on the first four...

International students are also supporting a bunch of high paying educational jobs of Canadians, there is a reason the tuition is 2 to 3x higher than Canadians, and not ever internation student is in the labour market.

The fact that average hourly wages growth has been accelerating not decreasing points to some other stronger factors at play in the labour market.
The question you should be asking is why wage growth in Canada is so high. it's actually higher than the US in both percentage and absolute terms over the last year.

It's an entirely reasonable position, not some kind of betrayal of principal. The sudden explosion in number of TFWs is bad for the economy and bad for social cohesion. And it's bad for migrants themselves, because the TFW regime leaves them vulnerable to abuse.

It's a right-wing myth that progressive people love immigration for immigration's sake. Nobody on the political left wants to see migrants being exploited, or a society based on a vast pool of dehumanized cheap labour, like in the Gulf states or Singapore.

I dunno. There has been a lot of "nation of immigrants" rhetoric that seems to have the glorification of immigration as its goal. And I think there's a kind of unholy interaction between that sentiment that appealed to a lot of Canadians and moneyed interests that like wage suppression and high asset prices.

Left and right wing don't seem very useful here. The Liberals have married some aspects progressive ideology with a lot of policy that hasn't worked well for the bulk of society. There's a lot of cynical woke capitalist stuff out there with major companies talking about how much they love diversity as they work toward leveraging their monopoly power and political connections.

The "world is one country" and "open borders" mindset is definitely out there, albeit a minority even on the left side of the political spectrum. Even if they're a bit quieter these days for obvious reasons.

If you talk to people who think this way they aren't really frightened by the prospects of a decline in living standards in affluent countries, because they clearly question why would should live so well while so many others are so poor.

As such, true social justice would be if everyone in the world enjoyed the same standard of living ie., that of Tunisia or Paraguay, which are right around the global average for human development.

(Since of course bringing everyone up the standards of the 50 richest countries is completely unrealistic.)

So his priorities are about 90% of provincial mandates?

I just don't get the 'Growth because growth' SimCity argument. It's simplistic and vaguely makes me think I'm talking to some sort of AI. Do these people talk to not-pregnant 20-something women and ask them why they're not pregnant? "But growth!" as if having kids is a calling just to aid some sort of statistical-based fetish.

One can make any place grow by throwing bodies into it. 'What kind of a country does one want?' is almost the question never asked. Growth is good, sure; there's more to growth just more than 'Line go up!'

Make a country worth a damn, and the growth will follow. Have a country rot out its base and importing a bunch of bodies as if they're statistics will just mean more misery to spread around.

Rien à dire sur la crisse du logement…

It should be #3 on the list, and based on the results of the teacher’s and nursing strike, if those are considered the CAQ’s top 2 “priorities” then the province is in a lot of trouble.

Multiculturalism is the sales pitch, not the goal unto itself. The current goal of the oligarchy is easy economic growth in a low TFR and limited low-hanging fruit developed world.

Confusion about the difference between theoretical ideology and practical outcomes is a hallmark of early 21st century democracies.

I'm shooting for a goal of 'A better, stronger, and more technologically advanced Canada that skillfully navigates the 21st century world'. One just can't sell the sacrifices required to people who are going to punch out before they realize the benefits. Or deal with the consequences of inaction.

Make one's game plan accordingly. 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 advice for certain, but fools continue to drink on the beach while the tsunami approaches.

It needs stating that multiculturalism is more than a sales pitch. Multiculturalism was officially adopted by the government half a century ago and is enshrined in our Constitution, Section 27. Some Canadians may not have noticed but multiculturalism is legally part of Canada's DNA and has been for a very very long time now. This ship has sailed.

All true but it's multiculturalism needing sky-high immigration forever in order to be achieved or optimal that is the sales pitch.

Ironically, Canada's immigration policies could potentially lead to a more monocultural Canada in the future. Just not a Euro-dominated one.

We may actually be closing in on peak multiculturalism in the next little while, after which diversity may in fact start to decline. This is especially likely if current policies remain the same.

From La Presse, they say that the province adds 800 people per day, this is the fastest rate of growth ever observed in the history of the province.

All that with a supposedly xenophobic government...

Sounds like a slippery slope argument that is not borne out by the facts. What monocultural group are you referring to? Chinese? (a country with different languages and ethnic group). Indians? (plethora of ethic groups, languages, religions).

And what about all the Filipinos, Nigerians, Haitians, Persians, Mexicans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Congolese, Syrians, Lebanese, Tunisians, etc., etc. (and Ukrainians, for that matter) that are moving to Canada?

It will be many decades (if ever) that this extremely diverse collection of individuals from many of the worlds countries, religions and ethnic groups, merges into a homogeneous, "mestizo" mass.
