Well, I lived downtown for about 10 years prior to this, and I enjoyed it well enough, but Broadway has always been my favourite part of the city. The "high street" nature of it makes it feel like a small town within the city, as opposed to living downtown, where things are more spread out and there's less of a neighborhood vibe, if that makes sense. I love having so many bars and restaurants within a block of my place, so that was a draw, but I also love the convenience of having a pharmacy, or a florist, or a barber, or an art shop, or a bakery, or a bookstore, or an optometrist, or etc etc etc, so close by. I'm at the Broadway Theatre all the time, and I love being able to hop over there so quickly and easily. Also, 8th Street is so handy. Walking for groceries or shopping there is do-able, though only for smaller trips if the weather's ok (in my experience) --- of course, new grocery options on Broadway itself would be amazing.
With respect to 639 Main specifically, as a construction nerd I loved following its progress from summer 2021 to its completion. The timing of it worked out better for me than the Baydo building, so I didn't actually look into that place. For me, 639 Main was perfect --- I was able to pick the exact suite I wanted, and I was happy with the layout, finishes, appliances, amenities, etc. The fact that it's completely brand new is great as a renter, and the management's been really good. I like being a block off of Broadway too, rather than directly on the strip --- less traffic noise, maybe a little more peaceful. I'm very curious about how the commercial space will eventually be used.
But anyway, yeah! I find the area very charming, and it definitely fits my lifestyle in a quality-of-life kind of way. It's also nice to live in an area that's seeing demand for new growth. I'd love to see 639 Main-type developments downtown, or on 33rd, or on 20th, or wherever, but that isn't really happening elsewhere in the same way as it is here. Right now, from my window, I can see Extra Foods, 8th and Broadway, and 12th Street, so I'll have a great view of any new construction in the area, and then those developments will make living here even better --- it's just a nice place to be as someone who enjoys urban living.
