Kettle Island *could* solve 80-90% of the King Edward heavy truck problem, if they wanted it to.

Could be 100%. But it's a long detour.

I don't think there were ever any plans to take heavy trucks completely off the Chaudière, so there is that route as well to the west that would still open to them.

Yeah but there's nowhere to go once on the Ottawa side there for trucks, worst than KE

Definitely the Kettle option is a must, I would even forego the Alexandria replacement in favour of Kettle (Manor Park NIMBYs be dammed!)

Scott is a designated truck route as are Bronson and Preston and a number of others in the core.

It's definitely a secondary route compared to King Edward, and would also be of much lesser importance than Kettle Island. But it still would be an option for the minority of trucks that have a western Ottawa to western Gatineau routing.

(Studies have shown the most common interprovincial truck routings are by far between the Innes-Industrial-St Laurent area and Gatineau around Maloney and north-central Hull near the Casino. Kettle Island would be a good alternative for these trips.)

Trucks on Scott and/or Preston would be an absolute nightmare.

This a the tramway all over again. "Annoucement is coming, any day now". I don't believe a word he says.

Feds commit to pushing forward on new Ottawa-Gatineau bridge
The Kettle Island corridor in the east end has been identified as the site for the next bridge, but no new money has been committed to the project.

Staff Reporter, Ottawa Citizen
Published Dec 16, 2024 • Last updated 1 minute ago • 1 minute read

The federal government says it will take the next steps to build a sixth bridge between Ottawa and Gatineau.

Citing downtown traffic issues, the fall economic statement says the government will initiate the “next phase” to plan and design a new “multimodal bridge” over the Ottawa River in the city’s east end, at Kettle Island.

“Following Corridor 5, the Eastern Bridge will become an important piece of transportation infrastructure that will optimize public transit networks and eliminate truck traffic in congested downtown cores, in turn, boosting economic growth in downtown Gatineau and Ottawa, accelerating commutes, and making active transportation safer,” the economic statement says.

Building a new interprovincial bridge in Ottawa’s east end has been a contentious issue for years. In 2012, the National Capital Commission (NCC) proposed building a bridge over Kettle Island, but the project was shelved because of opposition from local politicians and residents in the surrounding areas, and the Ontario government pulled its support.

In 2019, the federal government then asked the NCC to revive the idea of building a bridge in Ottawa’s east end and geotechnical studies were conducted in 2022. Kettle Island was proposed as “Corridor 5.”

The fall economic statement did not include any new funding for the project, nor did it include a timeline.

The document also pledged $31.6 million over three years to conduct feasibility studies for a two-kilometre portion on the Ontario side of the Ottawa River for a potential Gatineau-Ottawa tram project. In June, the federal government announced a joint investment of $163.5 million with the Quebec provincial government for planning the Gatineau side of that project.

Yeah will be perfect for East End Gatinois to zip over to jump on the high speed train. Sure. The Alexandria bridge is also for sale. Send Bitcoin to this address to buy your share.

Even if the bridge is far from being built, this is a huge win for Steven MacKinnon.

For sure and this probably helps him hang on. Though most people sitting in traffic have to realize they would be retired by the time this comes to fruition.

Kettle Island bridge not a priority for Ottawa: Mayor

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says a proposal to build a new interprovincial bridge to Gatineau is not a priority for Ottawa, as he continues to push for more funding from the federal government to help the city's cash-strapped transit system.

The federal government's fall economic statement tabled on Monday announced a commitment to building a new east end bridge(opens in a new tab) that would cross Kettle Island in the Ottawa River to connect Aviation Parkway in Ottawa near the Rockcliffe Airport and Montée Paiement in Gatineau. The government also announced new funding for feasibility studies into a two-kilometre portion of the proposed Gatineau-Ottawa tram project.

The two projects were the only new funding related to transportation announced for the city of Ottawa with no money for operating OC Transpo.

Sutcliffe appeared on Newstalk 580 CFRA's The Morning Rush with Bill Caroll Tuesday morning, noting that "time is running out" for the government to help Ottawa's transit system before "tough decisions" will have to be made.

"What I saw in the fall economic statement was focused mostly on priorities for Gatineau and priorities for others. They're not issued that we've raised," Sutcliffe said.

"When I've met with the Prime Minister, when I've met with members of his team, I've never asked for another bridge. The tramway into Ottawa is a Gatineau priority, it's not an Ottawa priority and I am getting a little concerned that time is running out because we’ve passed our budget, and we need to see some action soon."

So Mark's priority is the Manotick's truck traffic issue that puts thousands of pedestrians and residents at risk everyday, not the backwater that is King Edward and Rideau Street.

Pretty sick of him trying to block important projects that has nothing to do with him. Gatineau has been waiting for this bridge for decades, and that tramway funding announcement for years. Yes, Ottawa was screwed over having to pay over 50% of the O-Train expansion; take it up with the Province; it's their responsibility.

The truck problem on King Edward/Rideau/Waller/etc. could be more easily and cheaply solved by reviving the Vanier Parkway extension project through New Edinburgh Park to the MC bridge. But that would inconvenience some people.

I think you are failing to recognize a negotiating position when you see one. The message is that Ottawa's cooperation will come at a cost.

There are powerful influential people in the vicinities of both the Vanier Parkway extension and the Kettle Island/Aviation Parkway routes.

But in the case of the Vanier Parkway route, the traffic (and especially trucks) would be a lot closer to those people's houses.

But sure, strictly speaking the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge itself is not operating at capacity when it comes to traffic. (The problem is with the roads leading to and from it.)

Sure but the 50 is probably the biggest bottleneck with the majority of traffic probably coming from Gatineau itself at this point.

Why is Ottawa expected to roll over for something that has minor benefits for Ottawa (Very little truck traffic is going to be re-routed). In fact it probably enables growth that costs Ottawa taxpayers.

Yeah, that's the between-the-lines message for sure, but... is he "negotiating" from a position of strength?
