The Bay’s department store in downtown Vancouver is a shadow of its former self.
On a recent weekday visit, most of the elevators and escalators were out of service and arrows placed on the floor directed shoppers to a stairwell. The store was eerily quiet compared to the rest of Pacific Centre. There was no background music playing over the speakers, except in one corner of the sixth-floor menswear department....
.....Victoria resident Nick Alexander emerged from the store describing his experience as “just awful.”
“It’s just tanked,” he said, nothing there was only one working elevator and few staff. “I won’t be coming back.”
The state of the flagship store on Granville and West Georgia comes as the Hudson’s Bay Co. brand, which is Canada’s oldest retailer, had a bumpy ride last year, according to Vancouver-based retail analyst David Ian Gray.
“There’s no money for investment,” said Gray.

the lack of staff is a problem, the weeks before Christmas, the Bay Stores we went to (Langley, Metrotown, Surrey, and Richmond) had bare-bones staff, one woman was working about 4 counters in the makeup section, she had to go from Estee Lauder to Lancome to Clinique, etc, thats a bad way to treat staff and having to wait and wait in a busy shopping season made people leave without purchasing. The men's dept had one staff member, the shoe dept had zero staff, and housewares had zero staff. Also I find the pricing really hard to figure out, they removed the price scanners, It is a little bargain store to have them but they have no one who can help you to figure out the price.
I remember wanting to buy something at the downtown store last summer and I had to go to multiple cashiers to find someone who could run it through, I understand some brands only deal with their own stuff but they are also the only cashiers that have staff, crazy. I hate to lose Hudson's Bay but at this point they kind of deserve it.
The department stores we went to in Peru and Mexico and an abundance of staff and were very helpful.
Also the up escalator and elevators at Metrotown don't work, and the Guildford store down escalator doesn't work and the elevator is hard to find but it was working.
